Was down the docks today and despite the signs there was a couple of motorhomes parked there. It's a shame as there must have been three cars two motorhomes parked there and nothing else. I parked the motorhome over St the blackbox carparks no had a brief chat with someone that stayed the previous night there. No problems apprently.
Apart from the fact that we cannot park overnight in galway at quays, are g city council not discriminating against campers who wish to spend the day side seeing and shopping in galway by not providing adequate parking facilities. Think situation is a disgrace.

A camper van enjoys the same parking rights as any other car van truck bus provided it has current road tax current insurance certificate current crv or doe or nct displayed and the habitation area is not in use

I thought that Colin Mc Carthy on his interview on Galway bay FM was told that he couldn't overnight at the black bo on the Headford Rd,I may be wrong.

i agree with you on the parking rights of campers, and when i email those people elected by the galway people, i will be pointing this out to them all. whatever about overnight parking, we are definitely entitled to park there during the day same as any other vehicle, otherewise it can be regarded as discrimination.
hope all are having a lovely bank holiday weekend, that is down south anyway, not sure if its a bank holiday up north.

The 2nd section [ 02:01:05] is interesting when Keith the presenter talks to Cllr Noel Larkin, he mentions Cllr McNelis already speaking about the issue.
Keith also mentions a motorhome magazine piece about to come out and said he plans to interview the author on the next show. I was flicking through Wednesday & Thursdays shows but wasn't able to find this interview. Anyone else heard it?

Thanks for keeping on top of this topic, I am flabbergasted that they have removed the motorhome parking facility here, we've used it on several occasions for 10k runs and nights out in the city, and as many have noted, there are always 10+ vehicles parked here on any given weekend during the year, not to mention the summer season. I wouldn't mind but the parking costs are €2 per hour from 08.00 to 19.00 and €4 overnight so it ain't cheap - the Harbour had to be making good money.
Planning permission has to be totally irrelevant, for what, a larger parking space??? I know the IMCC are looking at it also and I'm seen some discussions on boards where they are pushing the point that we are parking, not camping which I think is the approach taken by the european aires etc.
I shall get on to emailing the city council members as has been suggested, but I think you are right Pat when you say this has very little impact on how things are done. Has anybody contacted the chamber of commerce? I think the tourism / business route might have a bit more clout. Haven't got the chance to look at the full history in detail and I will be interested if anyone has heard if K Finnegan has had the discussion on the magazine article.
I love my city, it is a great place to visit with loads to see and do, can't believe someone wants to damage the local economy by doing this.

Galway City a no-go for motorhomers

Galway City harbour where motorhomes have been banned
Galway City harbour parking closed to motorhomes
If you were thinking about taking a trip to Ireland in your motorhome then it would be best to plan a route that doesn’t involve Galway. Up until now the favourite place for parking up in the city has been the harbour where the Galway Harbour Company has provided facilities for motorhomers. That’s no longer the case because the Planning Section of Galway City Council issued an edit to the Harbour Company, compelling them to desist providing appropriate parking and facilities. The reasoning for this from the Council included, “The parking of motorhomes at this location represents a change in the authorised use of the land, from temporary car parking use permitted under PI. Ref. 12/67 (permitted until 26/06/2018), to a motorhome parking use.”
This, however, appears to be rather spurious reasoning, according to Colin McCarthy, Hon. Secretary of the Phoenix Motorhome Club of Ireland, who countered that, “Having consulted PI. Ref. 12/67 there appears to be no qualifying conditions with regard to the category of vehicle which may use the facility, Condition 5 confirms that 'the permission relates to the use of the land for parking purposes' no reference to any specific category of vehicle is to be found anywhere in the correspondence file relating to 12/67.”
The Council also stated that, “The parking of motor homes at this location also gives rise to issues of traffic and pedestrian safety, as the parking spaces are sized for cars only.”
Any comments from Galway Harbour Company??? I have not received any replies to e mails to them..

Unfortunately sometimes that happens. There's a lot of hype at the time and then nothing ever happens and they get their way. I've seen that happen over my life so often.
