Datsun/Nissan diesel engines were a favourite choice and let's not forget the Perkins 4 104

Don't forget the Dial Guage, very useful for checking cam lobes and for setting variable (multi-hole) cam sprockets.

Ah, the days when the only place you found chips was alongside the bit of cod or in tar on the road.

This is a double topic post, climate change and classic cars.

I'm LPG'ing my Vauxhall Monterey(isuzu trooper), 3.2 V6, 25 years old, runs like a Swiss watch.

They are bring out E10 petrol next year in NI so I'll have to use Super Unleaded at around 12 pence a litre more. Hence the move to LPG.

Now here is where the climate bit comes in...... If I continue to drive a 1996 car for another twenty years, assuming I can get fuel, what is more damaging to the environment, keeping the same car or scrapping it and buying a new electric one?

Surely not having to produce another car is better. 🤔

The ethanol can be removed. We’ve been taking it out of petrol for aviation use for quite a while.
It causes vapour lock at altitude and E10 is downright dangerous to use for aviation purposes.
Video below is how it’s done, only caveat is that we do a final filter with a special unit that completely removes moisture from the fuel.
We’ve had it tested and it’s ethanol content afterwards is less than 0.3%

That's a clever idea. Having vehicles with Weber's (and previous vehicles with Solex carbs) EtOH is something I dislike. I prefer Miller CVL to Castrol Valvemaster mainly on the advice of the engine builder I use.

The food dye is just to aid the visualisation of the phase split. To aid phase split, I'd have a narrower bottomed vessel.

(Putting on me nerd hat, EtOH isn't hydrophilic with petrol. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic applies to water only. What's happening is the EtOH is partially soluble in petrol but is miscible in water. The previous life of designing and engineering process fit in the Pharma industry is coming out)

These are all amazing reminders of 'proper' cars!
But for me, the overriding memory is waiting for the weekend to head down to the accessory shop.
Maybe a windscreen washer kit, maybe a hazard warning light kit. A reversing light, or wheel spacers, or a Peco exhaust booster (don't ask) etc etc.
Now it's all standard equipment.😐 Where's the fun in that?

Hybrids ( self charging ) don't fully drain or charge the batteries, I don't know what the percentages are though

I still think the technology has a way to go yet to be truly green.

We had a bit of discussion in work about the use of electric vans and they do not have the range for the distances some of ours cover on a daily basis and the electric supply to our premises/industrial park can not handle the required power and would need a serious upgrade by NIE which we would have to pay for, so until we cant get diesel vehicles we wont change.

they have bought up virtually all of the available rolling stock from most manufacturers. We are still waiting on vans ordered in March, and have to wait 6 months on two rigid trailers and 12 months on a new artic unit. All because Amazon has bought/leased everything available

The missinformation on these shows is craxy when it comes to EV's. There is only one car sold today that this rule applies for which is the Nissan Leaf, oh and the ENV 200 which is the same platform. The battery management system is poor and cooling is non existant which degrades the batteries. Anything else made after 2016 suffers little or no measurable loss and has increased hidden upper and lower capacity. For example the Tesla 60kwh battery is actually 65kwh so you never can charge it to 100% or compleatly dran it.

My 2017 BMW i3 has done 80k kms and it has lost less than 1% of capacity, I always keep it charged to 100% and faily regulary drive it down within 1 or 2kms of range. My battery in all likelyhood will outlast the car and there is a good chance it will continue to help power my home when I scrap the car.

While I'm not pro-EV, I'm not anti-EV either. I do realize that they have their place, along with ICE cars. The use of the 9 year old leaf with its 39mile range was off-putting to those who would be thinking of a second hand EV. The 20%-80% charge didn't look good either. The MG has one of the worst EV ranges I think on the market.

I sometimes have to do 500km in a day, arriving early for a days activities where there's no charging points. Having to stop for an hour or two to charge would not be practical. Thus, at the moment, an EV doesn't suit me. When the time comes to change the workhorse, I will get what fits my usage pattern, allowing for worst case. I do very little town driving where an EV is great.

Feck it sure I did almost 200km Sunday with a bike strapped to the roof. There bugger all charging points at the mountain bike centres.....

I am fortunate in that for my driving enjoyment, there is something a lot older, completely analogue to drive. All I'll say is I do like the sound of proper setup carbs.....

Insurance I consider low at €279 (AIG) for me and the wife and my eldest children who are in their 20's. My last car does not really compare as it was a bit of a monster but I bought my father a Renault Zoe and his insurance droped from €440 to €260 (Zurich). His previous car was a Kia Sportage.

Resale was strong last year but dipped again now the market is full of EV's, for a 2017 model it is now around €22k in value so its lost between 45 & 50%.

This is my classic that is currently in the garage waiting on a bit of a refresh as there are some minor rot issues starting to come through plus the engine is so sloppy I am amazed that it still runs. She is a 1976 Westfalia imported from Arizona around 2009 with the 2ltr fuel injected engine. She has carried us around Ireland and down into France for most years.
 


She is is going to get restored this year and hopefully if I can get the batteries cheap enough also converted to an EV. I have an EV west conversion kit so waiting on a few more EV's to get wrote off and the price of batteries to drop to pull the trigger.
