# David Bigham R.I.P.

One of the last living persons of Buddy Holly's history, David Bigham, has passed away.. As a member of 'The Roses' he sang backup on four tracks of Buddy, including “It’s So Easy.” The Roses were the only group that went on tour with Buddy Holly and The Crickets.

Bigham quit two weeks after Holly died, returning to the studio as a volunteer 31 years later.

“The moment I walked through that door, it was like I had left the night before. Everything was the same,” said Bigham!

Little did he know when he sang " 3 Stars " about Buddy, Ritchie and the Big Bopper that he would be dead a year later from a car crash whilst touring the UK.....Gene Vincent also on that UK tour survived but badly injured his leg;....

# Jack Neal, Buddy Holly's first singing partner, died 2015. R.I.P.

A participant in Lubbock's music history, Jack Neal, died 2015 at a local hospice. Neal was born on an undisclosed date in 1934, making him 80 or 81. He had stated online that he was two years older than Buddy Holly when the two began playing guitar together on Lubbock's KDAV Radio, the nation's first all-country-format in September 1953.

"I met Buddy after I went to work for his dad as a carpenter's helper. I was 15 and Buddy was 13. I got my guitar one day and was playing, and Mr. Holley said his son played a little guitar too. So Buddy and I got together and started playing music together."

Neal spent most of his life working as an electrician, but never stopped playing guitar.

Many Happy Returns today to Keith Richards. From bringing the rootsiest of Blues to 1960s Britain, to decades the lead guitarist of the biggest band in the world, Keef is an icon and an undisputed original.
Not Fade Away was both The Rolling Stones breakthrough hit in the UK and US, and the first really huge Buddy cover. Reinterpreted with the Bo Diddley beat, it helped keep Buddy's music fresh and showed how versatile his compositions were, and in the hands of the World's greatest rock n' rollers it's been played for 60 odd years to sell-out crowds.
Happy Birthday Keith, and thank you for your amazing contribution to Buddy's legacy.

Cropped photo of Buddy Holly at 'Snuf' Garrett's TV show "Dance Party' 1957.
Before legendary Snuff Garrett became a producer of a string of hits in the 1950s-70s, he just maded a few dollars a week as music librarian. He listened to thousands of records working at KLIF. They told him to get rid of all the 78s. and he said, "Can I have them?" He was riding the bus and carried them. Listening to both sides of all of them he realized what I liked and didn't like.
By the age of 17 he ended up in Lubbock and they got him work as a disk jockey. It was there that he met his friends Coleman, Buddy Holly and Waylon Jennings. Later Snuff had a TV show, Dance Party, on KSYD in Wichita Falls, where Holly was an occasional guest. He picked up the nickname Snuff, most likely from a brand of tobacco product called Garrett. In 1958, while still in his teens, Snuff moved to Hollywood and began to work at Liberty Records.
On February 3, 1959, Garrett broadcast his own tribute show to Holly after he was killed (along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper) in the plane crash in Iowa.

Buddy on stage at the Kalamazoo Central High school in Kalamazoo [Michigan]!!
Alan Freed brought “The Big Beat” to Kalamazoo on April 28, 1958 and each of the two shows drew 1800 screaming fans. This star-studded group of musicians may be the greatest to ever grace a Kalamazoo stage. The line-up included Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (I Put a Spell on You), Frankie Lymon (Why Do Fools Fall in Love), Larry Williams (Bony Moronie, Dizzy Miss Lizzie) The Diamonds (Littlle Darlin’, The Stroll) The Chantels (Maybe)

Gordon Payne and The Crickets.
Out of high school, Gordon began performing with local legends Don White and JJ Cale. Cale’s bass player, Bill Raffensperger, introduced Gordon to J.I. Allison of The Crickets. “I am so grateful to those guys. They helped me get my foot in the door.” Over his career: Gordon preformed in live recording bands with Cale and White, Tanya Tucker and Waylon Jennings during the outlaw years.
In the 1980s, Waylon Jennings called to ask the Crickets (JI, Joe B and Sonny) to open for him on a tour. They stayed with him for five years. Gordon Payne (Waylon's guitarist) played lead and on a few gigs when Sonny broke his arm. Gordon joined the Crickets as lead guitarist and singer when Sonny left. This trio of JI, Joe B and Gordon toured for 10 years including visits to the UK.
However, the road began to take its toll. With twenty-five years in music, millions of road miles, and a wall of gold records to his credit and with his boys Jackson and Coleman grown and gone, he left music and found a day gig.

On Jan. 23, 1959, the Winter Dance Party tour, featuring Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and Dion & The Belmonts, played its first date at Milwaukee's Million Dollar Ballroom.

It would become the most famous tour in the history of Rock and Roll, but would only last for 10 shows with the original lineup.

Long, long time ago…...

The Winter Dance tour TONIGHT in 1959, Buddy's last ever gig. His plane crashes at 01:20 am. All four killed; Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper and the Pilot Roger Peterson. There was only ever one poster for tonight's gig as it was organised at the Surf Ballroom late.

I knew it was somewhere....

"As far as I know, the wreckage of the plane in which Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens died, along with its pilot, remained in the possession of its owner Jerry Dwyer of Clear Lake, Iowa. Dwyer, who managed the airport from which the plane operated and was the registered owner of the plane (though not its pilot on that sad occasion), stored the wreckage at an undisclosed location. When he died in 2016 the wreckage passed into the possession of his widow Barbara Jean Dwyer.

It would seem that it was likely still in her possession when she died in April, 2021. Her late husband had long promised a book on the crash up until his death from Alzheimer’s, and his widow is supposed to have been working with an author to complete the project, though I have not heard anything more about it.

As to the plane itself, since Barb Dwyer passed away only a little over a month ago, its disposition is probably still in the works (assuming it still exists)."

Buddy Holly and Lonnie Donegan.

As Roger Sayer mentioned elsewhere, Buddy Holly already knew Lonnie Donegan from a TV appearance in the US. Lonnie topped the US charts with Ledbetter's Rock Island Line in 1956. Buddy saw it, liked the song, and included it in some of his shows.
During the 1958 UK tour, Buddy and the Crickets were invited by Donegan to a midnight concert in attend London. Chris Barber and Ken Colyer were there and it was great. This was the first time Buddy and The Crickets saw dixieland bands, and while they didn't really care for that kind of music, afterwards they said it was played really well!
