Battery maintainer

Guys..........have just been given a Ring.....solar power battery maintainer, model nu.rsp240. It states that it is suitable for battery size up to 100 Ah, and 138mA.......grand.
It comes with battery clips and a 12v dc power plug. Very nice.

Question is.........what do I do with it. Can I use it on my van.....and what exactly are the dooos and don'ts with it. Will it keep the engine battery charged..........the leisure batteries(2). Im just not sure what it can or cannot do :'(

The tech heads will be along now shortly and they will be able to put you right.
Let me know how it goes I would love to use my hairdryer! LOL
If you get it sorted I will park next to you at a meet and drop over for a spot of pampering. O-)

I can't see it doing any harm but I have no electrical knowledge.

We have a 120 watt solar panel on the roof of our van. It would produce a max of 10 amps in ideal conditions(which never happens)
I have seen it produce almost 9 amps in the south of France one July.

We almost never use hook up.

I am not sure what yours would produce in comparison but I am sure someone who understands it all will let you know.

Some of those have no safety circuits and even allow back flow away from the battery, find and read the tech sheets as it would be expensive to have to replace your leisure batter

Biffo, why not give the technical department at Ring a ring? (get it?) They are very helpful and will be able to help you

They all come in from Asia to a central distribution center I don't think they have a technician employed probably only data sheets on the products

I just had a look at the spec sheet for it and it's basically a 2.4w trickle charger. You could hook it up to your starting battery to keep it topped up. It wouldn't have enough gumption to recharge a dead battery, but it might be ok to keep a charged battery topped up. It's likely that your pair of leisure batteries exceeds the 100Ah so it wouldn't do a lot for them. Your starting battery is your best bet I recon.

According to the spec, it's ok to leave connected overnight, so it has discharge protection (diode).

2.4w. 138mA.

I forgot to mention, I have it's baby brother, the RSP150. It's permanently connected up to my ride on mower battery and it hasn't missed a beat.

Right lads.........looks like it may be useful for something after all. As the van is in shed and plugged in once a month for 24 hours it and given a 25 mile spin every week.......I'm hoping my batteries are sound. The trips start shortly and I can leave panel in the van .

Thanks for the feedback everyone

I had a similar thing a few years back to keep the leisure battery in the caravan in Spain topped up, it destroyed the battery or that's what I was told by the dealer I bought it off

I have been using a 2.4 solar for some time now
Ran leads to one of those Multi cigar socket to inside the van but found that they are not man enough
Today finally found what I wanted
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3308…1497.l2649
Looks like it will do the job and has decent size wires and is easy to mount.
Ordered one for the time being but if ok will get a second to mount outside to give me an external 12v socket

Just thought I would show you in case it any use to any one else
