02 Ducato (244) handbrake cable replacement

Daisy failed her CVRT test on a handbrake cable. 02 Ducato 2.8 on the 244 platform with rear disc brakes TEK Rotec body. The tester said I was in trouble. i thought it was a bit of light hearted banter.
Took of the offending right rear wheel, sure enough no handbrake application. When I traced the route of the cable the fresh water tank is covering it (or at least the cover of it is) and the adjustment mechanism as well. Cable ordered.

Anyone ever come across this before? I normally do my own maintenance but I don't have a pit or a ramp and I'll be out of action from Thursday for at least a week.

Any suggestions?

Hi bud,

I'm not exactly sure about your application but normally there's a single cable out of the hand brake and about mid point underneath the chassis there's a clamp that splits the action into two cables, one for each wheel. If the other side is working, then you'll probably have to look from that point on. Maybe it just became loose...

In mine (230) it runs through the middle closer to the exhaust, water thank is to the side, so no obstruction.

If you ordered the cable already, no harm on replacing it, but did you order the whole run or just that last bit? I'm guessing that just the bit from the wheel up to that clamp/junction or whatever the name for it is...

Also, each wheel will have an adjuster if you look at it from the back. With a flat screw driver you move the adjuster up/down.

The adjuster and the clamp where the cable(s) attach are under the fresh water tank cover and not visible. It would be difficult to say the least to access all the screws to remove it without a ramp / pit. I might try ring around motorhome repairers and have the vaseline to hand.

That's a poor design isn't it?

What about draining the water and taking the tank down? empty it shouldn't be too bad, right?

Alternatively drive the MH up onto the levelers placed at one side. The extra few inches of ground clearance will make the job easier.

The problem is access and I don't have levelers. Even with that I'm not the slimmest of chaps. Access to a pit would let me drop the tank or at least take the protective cover off and see how the land lies. Pity there are no "rent a ramp" garages around.

Window of opportunity is closing as I'll be out of action for at least a week, maybe more. Looks like I'm going to have to leave it in somewhere to get done.

Thanks for the input.

Who'd of thought a few shots of WD40 would do the job?
Passed the test this morning.
I'll replace the cable over the winter when time and facilities allow
