With all the ongoing political issues in the Catalonia region in Spain I am having second thoughts about being in that area for any length of time.
We have plans to travel to Cherbourg later this month (booked 14th, but flexi fare) and head south for the Spanish border and initially stopping south of Barcelona for a while, and possibly moving south towards Benidorm.

What’s people’s feelings about the situation there?
I think it could turn ugly if independence is declared with the possibility of disruption to fuel and supplies etc in a general strike as well as the obvious security issues.
Thinking now it may not be a good idea to travel there.
Maybe crossing northern Spain down into Portugal is an option.

What’s your views?

Having property there I can honestly say I am not concerned in the slightest, they have shook this tree before declaring independance etc and it has achieved nothing. The Catalans/Spanish are a very passionate people and will come out on strike/protest/support etc for anything they feel will give them a day off work, after all they love a good time. I love the people and the area and honestly believe that a lot of this is hype by the press. The images of the violence used by the police etc was shocking but as in all situations like that there can be another side of the story which isnt reported, only the stuff which gets a reaction.

We are heading out on the 12th by plane for a week and are south of Barcelona/Salou not too far off the N232/AP7, could get a mini craic meet going with 1 van lol

To be honest unless you are going into the larger cities I wouldn't think you will have any problems , you have plenty of time to see how things develop. Then you can always plan a different route going Bordeaux to Biarritz on the A63, then N-121-A Pamplona on the-AP15 ( E804 ) to Zaragoza, on the AP-68 to Sagunto -Valencia on the A-23-AP-7 ( E15 ) then the coast to about 16 hrs Benidorm .probably the most direct route in any case.

It doesn't have seemed to deter foreigners coming to this country and in my humble opinion this is not a forum for politics, it's about campervans

Not a political issue at all, just ascertaining the safety or otherwise of traveling at a volatile time. Sorry, not sure of your points of deterring visitors to this country.

@TheFatControtllor
Yes John, had that feeling too so at the moment the plan is to go ahead and will be ending up near Salou for a period of time, probably towards the end of the month. We’re over for about 6 weeks and planning further down the coast south of Valencia near Altea or Calp or maybe Benidorm.

@Sprinter
Thanks Martin, had a look at that route too. You’re probably right and it may be a route we could take, either on the way there or the way back.

Jon, I travelled over last weekend. Cherbourg, Pontorson, Royan, Pamplona, Benicassim. I'm now in Benicassim just north of Valencia, should be here for another 10 days , if all goes well. I have not seen or heard of any problems relating to the vote. If I do, then I will keep this thread updated.

Will be watching this thread with interest as we have booked immediately after Christmas to head a similar route.
We have time to see how things pan out, but crossing south of Biarritz & head for Portugal is an option.
Alternatively when we hit south of France, turn left & head for Italy.
l hope whatever dicision you make you have a safe & great holiday

I would have thought that that remark might have flagged it as a political issue.

Eamonn, I think you are reading too much into the opening post.

The guy is clearly asking about how he might get caught out in his van if things kick off. No discussion was invited around the causes of said 'kicking off'.

Will be in Barcelona next week.

They have hired us to show them how to riot properly. Trailer load of 'half bricks' with us.

Of course I am joking! But will be there next week. Looking forward to it.

Yep, as the lads said above you'll have no issue whatsoever. The riots will only occur in the heart of the city for one or two blocks and they'll have no interest on fecking with one of their main source of income (tourism).

In these type of situations the police will block the streets anyways so it's almost impossible to get caught in the middle.

Cheers,
Rami
