WAXOLY

Hi All,

Something I have meaning to do for a while waxolying the chassis and cab on my Ford Transit. Starting with a good steam cleaning and letting dry for a few days. The chassis is V.good so this will keep it for many years to come and it has only just passed a 2 year C.R.V.T. Now this is where you guys come in with you vast experience!! Cara Motorhomes are telling me to Schutz the underside of the timber floor!! And Tristan Pat Horan Motorhomes suggest liquid bitumen!! The floor is in very good condition and is painted black from the factory. But do not intend going under this again for quite a while so what to do it all now and be finished with it..another job off the the list so to speak. Also I believe the Schutz today contains waxoly can't be a bad thing. I am going to take a few before and after pictures for whenever I might be selling to show it was a preventive measure and not a cover up.

My last van, an Autosleeper, was in great condition when we bought it and I had it waxoyled to extend its lifespan as I reckoned corrosion was the weakest link in the vehicle construction. It was on a Ford Transit chassis.

I contacted Autosleeper to see if the floor was marine ply in which case I would have left it alone. They could not tell me if it was marine or even outdoor grade !!

I hade the whole lot done, including the inner side of the bonnet and inside the cab door panels with a clear version. The underside of the floor was sprayed in the ordinary waxoyl, although it had a black colour to begin with.

I did read recently on another forum that someone believed that the ply would not be able to 'breath' if waxoyled. However, I reckon if the treatment was done after a longish dry period then this would not be an issue. I also think that the ply could 'breath' through the upper side. In other words the interior of the van.

These are my thoughts and actions. The views of an amateur with no specialised knowledge.

Hi Davy,

It would be much handier to do all in waxoly alright..that was my only concern letting the ply breath!! but as you say it can do so from the inside. They are costly purchases not to get as long as possible out of them and the salt on the roads doesn't help. Declan

If Tristan advises liquid bitumen, then this is what i would use on the ply. I am not a fan of body Schutz as it can trap moisture and continue corroding. I prefer waxoyl. Definately think it is worth doing on a cab and chassis of a Ford Transit.

There's no doubt Tristan knows what he is talking about and I know I personally would take his advice.

Body shutz is a disaster underneath cars and has destroyed many a classic. It looks good when sprayed but does not adhere like stone chip so when it gets a weak spot or a small crack the water just creeps between it and the floor. The end result on tin is that the car rots. wood I assume would end up the same .
I used waxoyl over the entire underneath of our last van and 5 years later it was perfect and the waxoyl had dried like a candle wax coating.

Today she got waxed after a week left to dry after a v.good steam cleaning. 5 liters of Waxoly and 6 liters of Schutz with added waxoly.

Did you inject the sills? Worth drilling a hole and putting the extended hose down inside the sill.

Ally, I don't think there is a place we missed as we pumped it into any hole that we could but didn't grill any holes 8-) The only down side is i don't think we will be using it anytime soon..I'm as high as a kite 8-)

Takes a few weeks for the smell to go. Ours quickly became usable, though there continued to be a hint of smell for a few weeks.

Charcoal is very good at absorbing an oily chemical smell. Get some bbq charcoal and crush it into a fine powder and place into a open bowl in the motorhome. Just make sure that the charcoal has not been treated with a fuel agent to aid lightening.

when you close it up for the night place a few saucers of bread soda around the place it is great for absorbing the smells also,
if you have spilled milk , or someone trows up, wash the area with a solution of bread soda and water works a treat in getting rid of the smell.
