Motorhome MOT Over 3500 KG in NI

Hi everyone

I have a new motor home bought last year which is rated at 3650 KG.

I have just received an mot reminder. The van will be 1 year old in may, but i am not sure what category it need to be tested under. It appears to be classed as a Heavy Goods vehicle (HGV) so it will need to be tested as such, but i have been reading different post about Motor homes over 3500 KG being MOT'd the same as a car.

my past Motor home was a converted van which when i first attempt to PSV it they refused stating it was clearly a Motorhome so had to be MOT'd

Bit confused as i have also read it does not need tested until 4 years old and not 1 year old

Very little to go on from the NI Direct web site.

Anyone else have a similar weight van could advise me on this

Thanks in advance

Jack

My van is 3850 and did not have my first MOT until it was 4 years old. It is classed as a PVT vehicle.

Does it have an "English" reg as we get that with vans we buy in England, they get mot'd before vehicles here. Usually a call to the mot centre sorts it out

As John has said it is a mistake.
The same thing has happened to me with the current van and the previous one.
You can just ignore it or call your local test centre for some peace of mind. They will tell you to ignore it.

All Motorhomes in NI are tested the same as a car. There is an issue with the MOT booking form online and there is no option to select Lane 1 which you need to go to, so you book it the same as a car, turn up and they redirect you to lane one if need be.

But as you say, your's does not need MOT'd, the class must be wrong on your V5, ring DVLA.

Do as Mark said above....
My van over 4000kg was one year old in February and I received a MOT test notice, I rang the mot centre and they told me to disregard the notice...test not required until 4 year old.

Same happened to me a couple of years ago. Didn't get a reminder except for first year. I think it may be because DVLA think a Fiat Ducato is always commercial.

Thanks for all the advice, called into the MOT centre in Ballymena Hey and they confirmed 4 years for the first test and ignore the letter.

See what happens when the road tax is due lol

You will have no issues taxing it.
We taxed ours online around the same time as the Test letter arrived.
Same as the last van too.
