I'm sure you are all aware of the rip off ferry prices on the Irish sea. We pay over the odds to go GB, also anyone wishing to visit NI or Ireland it is much cheaper to go to France from GB, so why bother? which in turn is hurting our touristy industry, no one seems be doing anything about it!

As cheap as £56 return from England to France, with the same vehicle and same amount of people, it is £307 from Larne to Cairnryan!! Lets get this reduced!

Please "like" our Facebook page

http://www.facebook.com/pages/…3689015370

We have wrote letters to politicians and hopefully we can get things to change but we need your help, once we get enough numbers then we can go to Newspapers etc

Thanks!

Just checked a return journey, Stranraer to Belfast return for 7 day trip, lowest price found, £307.
I don't think I will be visiting Ireland anytime soon.

Irish Ferries have next years schedule out
€356 return to France for motorhome plus 2 in either May or end of August.
Thats with cabins both ways so how they can justify the charges on the Irish Sea beats me

Larne - Cairnryan is about 25 miles last year it cost me and the wife with our 5.4m M/H £130 (ish) one way (thats with C&CC discount)

Gills Bay (North of Scotland) to St Margrets Hope (Orkney) about 25 miles same motor home same passengers £76 (no discount)

Why?

I have no idea but the stories of the Irish sea ferries being a rip off certainly ring true, the day sailing Belfast-Birkenhead USED to be a bargin but no more and if you want to take a M/H on the ferry you need a mortgage even though at 5.4M mine is not much larger than a large car (Espace)

In a nutshell - Stena bought DFDS and put the prices up. Stena (who own P&O and now DFDS) have a monoply on the Irish Sea, yet the Monoplies commission cleared them of all charges.

I have been doing a LOT of work on this and have quite a few eye openers to report, I have 3 letters so far from MLA's, which I will put here. One MLA still fighting the case.

Put it like this, don't et excited :(

My letter to several MLA's 29/08/2100
--------------------

Dear Sir/Madam,

A growing number of people in Northern Ireland and Ireland are
getting extremely frustrated at the Ferry prices from Ireland (North
and South) to GB. It is possible to to go from England to France with
a vehicle for as little as £56 return. Yet from Larne and Belfast to
Scotland is £300 + return with the same amount of people and the same
vehicle.

I asked the question on P&O Ferries facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/poferries

"
As cheap as £56 return from England to France, Larne to Cairnryan £300
return!
Why so expensive?
"

The reply I received was...

"In the past on our continental routes we had Duty Free shops which
made a great deal of profit for our company and as such we could
discount the cost of tickets on these routes. Since EU restrictions
were introduced we no longer have Duty Free shops onboard, however the
customers who use these routes are accustomed to paying very low
amounts for the tickets and will simply use the competition if we no
longer discounted them. On the Irish Sea routes there is much less
competition and our customers are accustomed to paying much higher
prices for tickets. While I can appreciate your comments in regard to
the price difference for similar duration crossing I hope that you can
appreciate that as a business we will apply a price which we feel is
sustainable and profitable for the route. "

As Stena/P&O are one company and they have bought all the routes on the
Irish sea, even going as far as closing Heysham to Belfast to make
further gains on their other crossings, this seems to me that as they
have no competition they can charge what they want. Surely the NITB or
yourselves should be doing something about this as the amount of people
on the mainland that would come here for a holiday but instead go to
France is quite overwhelming! a quick search on camping/caravaning and
Motorhome websites will prove
this.

Some messages from English members wishing to visit..

"Why are ferries to Ireland SO expensive?? £300 return (just tried some
random dates)!! Its like the olden days on the Channel crossings. I'd
love to go to Ireland but I'm not going because it is a rip off.
Crossed Calais to Dover last week (similar distance as SW Scotland to
NI) and went for £32 (admittedly it was on a multi deal of 6 crossings,
but still its in a different league). What the those ferry companies
need is some serious competition, come on Speedferries how about flying
the pirate flag on the Irish sea!
Brian"

"Having just priced some Car Ferry options from the UK to Ireland
return I am puzzled as to why they need to charge such high prices for
a 2/3 hour journey. Example Cairnryan to Larne is about £300 return.
Time of the year.... you might say, but no, I can get to France from
Dover for £83 return. So come on the UK and Irish Tourist Boards and
Ferry Companies, you are not "encouraging motorhomers" to travel either
way and the prices are over the top. So we like many others this year
are off to France instead. !"

This is affecting the amount of money that could be gained from tourism
and of course affecting the people in NI & Ireland that want to holiday in GB.

Do we need another ferry company to come into place? will the tax
loading on flights that our MLA's are trying to get rid of affect the
ferry prices also? or are we doomed to be paying for the "most
expensive bit of water in the world" over and over?

Yours sincerely,

Some replies will be posted soon....

Dear Mr *****

Thank you for your correspondence.

The issues you have raised are certainly interesting, and I would share your frustrations. There are a number of anomalous costs in Northern Ireland that are becoming more recognised and as such are beginning to be challenged.

I am not aware of the full details of this particular issue and I thank you for the work you have undertaken so far. I have forwarded your correspondence to the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to seek their views on the matter. I will get back in touch with you when I have received a response. I will also request one of my party colleagues to formally raise the question with the Minister for Enterprise Trade and Investment, who is responsible for overseeing the tourism sector. Again I will get back to you once I have received a response on this.

I trust you find this helpful, however, please do not hesitate to contact me again if you have any further issues.

Kind regards

Sam Nelson

From David Ford MLA to Mr Clarke Chief Executive NITB...........

I enclose a letter which I have received from one of my constituents, Mr ***(ally)

I would appreciate your comments on this matter, and would enquire if this is an issue you have raised with the Department for Enterprise Trade and Investment.

David Ford MLA

______________________________

Reply from Mr Clarke of NITB.......................

Thank you for your letter dated 5th September in relation to concerns raised by your constituents over the perceived high costs to travel between Northern Ireland and Scotland compared with the cost to travel between England and mainland Europe.

As your constituent correctly indicates Stena/P&O is the sole ferry operator from Northern Ireland; however there is competition from the Republic of Ireland to GB with Irish Ferries, Swansea Cork, P&O Ferries and Stenaline operating the route.

When Stena proposed the acquisition of the routes previously serviced by DFDS the competition commission reviewed the proposal and raised no concerns at that time. The Commission found that a deal did not result in a 'substantial lessening of competition' on the ferry market between north-west England and NI. One of the conclusions drawn by the commission form this case was that there was no loss of direct competition between the longer diagonal routes across the Irish Sea resulting from the acquisition. Stena Line is also opening a new port at Cairnryan later this year which I believe will enhance the service available to passengers.

NITB works closely with Tourism Ireland to promote NI as a holiday destination. Today more than ever before prices and value for money are the key decision making factors.
Tourism Ireland dedicates a large proportion of it;s resource to work in partnership with carriers developing and promoting special offers and value breaks to NI. I have attached examples of the price led campaigns that featured recently in GB.

I concur with the comment from a representative of the operator that pricing is a commercial decision however I hope that I have assured you that we and colleagues in Tourism Ireland are doing everything possible to build strong partnerships with carriers to promote NI as an affordable, must visit destination.

Alan Clarke Chief Executive NITB

Yeag Right Is this fella for real?
Anytime I ever checked Stena and Irish Ferries prices were identical. Heaven help us if there was no "competition".

bottom line is if we dont pay their high prices how do we get across the water?
the ferry companies know that, we are being held to ransom.

Thanks Ally , your efforts are admirable. However, having written to the G"ovt. years ago over foot and mouth, and being told to contact the Welsh G"ovt. Office, as they thought Bangor NI. was Bangor Wales, (FFS!) I wouldn"t hope for any help from any G"ovt. office. That is, of course, unless you have 6 kids, 4 inlaws, no job and have moved here from another country...! In short, we"ve always been "stroked" with regard to ferries and, as a commercial user, I think we always will be.Now, I wonder if Celtic Link fancy having a go up here :D

Looked at that, the extra it costs to shop in Tesco compared to Asda/Iceland/Lidl you are paying the same for the boat, that's what we found anyhow.

Thanks and yeah it looks that way, talking to a brick wall comes to mind. There is only one way we have of getting the price reduced and that is to boycott Stena and P&o but that is not going to happen.

Yeah we need to build either a bridge or a tunnel. Do you think we could raise the money and be directors and cut at least 75 per CE of the price? I'm up for it what about others and if there's enough of us it might scare them into taking he price down.

Looks like a lot of good work there. I am sorry to say I imagine there will be little of no action. These things go on for years before an MP takes the bull by the horns and acts. It does seem that a Motorhome can get to France for less than going to Scotland at certain times of the year. Am I correct?

I have to agree that the prices on the Irish Sea crossings are far to high in comparison to the fares to France. What we have been doing for the last few years is combining our trip to France with a trip to England. We sail to France and then at some stage while in France cross from Calais to Dover and enjoy as many days as we like in England/Wales at a fraction of the cost. We then return to France and enjoy the remainder of our holiday there before returning home.
