which GPS for a motorhome

I have been using a garmin nuvi but the maps really need updated now.

Having looked into the many units available with free updates I was thinking of changing.
There are a few GPS available which allow the user to set the size of their vehicle.

Is anyone using one of these units?
Are they worth the extra cost ?

I'm in the same situation, still using my trusty Garmin C310 Streetpilot but time to upgrade. I have been looking at the Truckmate be good to hear if anyone is using one what they think of it.

I use a garmin Zumo 550, it does the car, camper and motorbike. you can set the size of vehicle but someone told me this has to do with speed limits rather than narrow roads or low bridges as I originally thought. Don't really know but even in the bus setting it has taken me on a lane with a seven foot pedestrian underpass. Much cursing followed.

LOL..

Wayfarer, I know how you feel. Ours has taken us down roads with grass growing down the middle.

We have started running ours but not really using it until we get near the location. Maps are still required in our vehicles..

Same as that mark, my wife navigates the old fashioned way but we use the gps to get into and out of cities and large towns or to locate campsites by coordinates.

Hi

We bought a Ventura Snopper S6000 and are very impressed with it. You programme in length, height and weight of the motorhome and so far it has kept us out of trouble! We have used it in France, Scotland and over here. It has the ACSI sites programmed in which means not only does it take you to the site but enables you to do a search in an area to view sites - this was really helpful in choosing our next stop when we were in France and didn't always have internet access. Hope this helps.

So there is one that actually works, I heard of others that you put the dimensions in but they were not very reliable.

Thanks for that. We have looked at the Ventura range before but had read that their updates are not as often as other manufactures.

Had you had it long enough to receive any updates yet?

We liked it because of the ACSI feature for France.

Mark, did you know that you can download the acsi sites for all of Europe for your Garmin as POI's, also the Aires.

Mind you I have never had any luck connection my garmin to the PC.
Is this supplied by Garmin or a third party?

All you should need is a USB cable and a piece of software called a Garmin POI loader which you can download from the Garmin.co.uk site

Scroll to the bottom and go to the downloads page, save the file to a Folder, lets say "GPS" where you can download all your POI's Then you load them to the garmin via the POI loader. I have not done it for a while so I have to read up and if you need further help, no prob.

Forgot to tell you last night Mark that for the ACSI POI's go to the link below, then register, log in to"my ASCI" and there you can download all the ACSI sites. There is also a French site to get the up to date list of Aires in POI format, I will dig that out as well if you want it.

Click on Installation sur GPS , then select Garmin

sign up to the site and they email the POIs

Should do Ally. Check the menu and if POI is listed there along with bluetooth etc then you should be ok.

Update it, I have heard that you can hack the Garmins and put the latest maps on them, not that I would do such a thing. :shock:

I can make relevant info a sticky in each category. Easier than making a new page and keeps it in one place.

Ok all done (I think) I downloaded the POI Installer but not sure if I needed it or not. ACSI wouldn't let me save the file it installed it automatically from the website?

I see Wayfarer has posted the link all ready.

My sat nav Is a nuvi 250, pretty old at this stage, but still works great.
The maps can be updated to an, SD Card as a Image file. It then can used without upsetting the Original map all ready installed in the unit it self. You just select which map you want to use from the option's menu.

To get the image file, Garmin have it for sale on their website!!. Or do a search on Google for the file Lots of options will come up :dload:

Finally got round to doing this and have a problem already.

Can't find a garmin USB lead so used a generic one.
Garmin device shows that it is connected to pc but POI Loader cannot find the device.

Is it the lead or something else?
