I see that electricity prices are predicted to rise to 80p per kWh in the uk soon and probably at least that in ROI. Lots of campsites thinking of installing meters but at £200 per meter per ehu point others are talking about a flat rate for electric at £10 to £15 per night.

I think solar panels will be very popular next year.

Is there another way with smart tech, the more modern sites in Europe seem to have a system which feeds back the usage at each ehu outlet to the computer at the reception.

I’ve looked into options but retro fitting the systems I see in Spain etc would cost to much for most sites, including mine. Individual meters per ehu are an easier and cheaper retro fit. Or systems like the meter maid initially designed for boats.

Great set up but the cost to retro fit would be huge.

With some sites having integrated the cost of EHU into the staying fee, without the option of not having EHU (such as Kilrush Marina), I suppose that means the rate is going to go up for these sites, regardless if you use EHU or not, wonder if they'll revert to separating the costs.

Or maybe we'll see these appearing at the EHU posts :)

Back on topic.
Are we likely to see the current high price of electricity being used by unscrupulous campsite owners as an excuse to significantly inflate their pitch prices and at the same time making the price inclusive of EHU even if it's not wanted.
There were isolated examples of this practice appearing last year for the 2022 season.

Stayed at Travers Holiday Park in Bundoran for a night this week - currently 27 euros per night Inc ehu. He is considering dropping the pitch fee to 25 euros and metering electricity.

So his Ehu was €2? Doubt that!

It wasn't separately priced before. All pitches we're just 27 Inc ehu. He just feels that if people don't want the metered electric the pitch fee should be slightly cheaper. I think he's already at the lower end of Donegal campsite prices.

Problem then starts, people pluging in when he's not looking, like in Goosey island, they need to remove some points like The Hub

It's easy to fit inexpensive lockout devices to individual breakers to lock off outlets or groups of outlets and put those who don't want EHU in that area.

I don’t know what other campsites will do but for me I have a pitch price and then an extra €3 if people wanted ehu. All my pitches have ehu available on them. Next year I intend to have a pitch price and an option for Ehu but it’s likely to be €5 not €3.

I have ordered some plug in meters and will run my van using my typical devices, fridge etc and see how many kWh I use to get an idea of my usage to set a realistic price. This won’t help with assessing the use for people using electric heaters or heating the hot water on electric but it’ll give me a starting point.

I'd factor in the heating and hot water, they'll use it whether they need to or not, I've paid for it mentality

All leccy should be 3amp, or 6amp max, enough to charge your battery and power your fridge. Use gas for everything else.

That's my view and that's how we ran the CL.

I agree 100%. Higher limits can lead to the overloading of the grid within the campsite resulting in a significant voltage drop which can damage electronics that may be voltage sensitive.

It would also stop people using electric heaters to warm awnings that were empty and nobody was in.

That's what prompted us "we're paying for it so we're gonna use as much as we can".

"our 2kw fire just tripped" "our 2kw immersion just tripped" Our electric is for keeping your batteries charged and powering your fridge. Do you have no gas left?

I’ve met many people on sites who have said exactly that to me, I’ve paid for electricity I’m going to get my monies worth. The only time I see people conserving electricity is when they get an initial allowance and are charged extra for additional kWh.

I’d love to go down that route but the outlay is putting me off as I have more than one ehu per fuse in the main board.

I was on a site in Vera (Spain) €3 for 6amp supply €4 for 10amp I was in the 10amp location not because I needed 10amp but because it was initially a quiet pitch with no neighbours.

Then came along 2 Brit vans travelling together. 30 mins in and the owner had to reset the trip. Another hour later the owner was resetting the trip again. The Brit turned to me and said is your electric supply ok, mine keeps tripping. I asked what was he using as mine was fine. He rattled off a long list of things using electricity, so I told him not to use them at the same time. I’ve paid extra for 10amps I’m going to use it.
I saw him in the morning and he was complaining that he had no electric over night and the owner wouldn’t re set the trip. I said I’m not surprised as the owner did warn him after the last reset that he wouldn’t do it again.

I don’t want to downgrade my supply as I’d be forever dealing with people and re setting the trip but I can see why many sites are 6amp or less.

Yes, and often in a locked box so you have to go cap in hand to the reception and ask for a reset.

A good few years ago during October, we were at a Caravan Club rally on one of the more renowned campsites. The main fuse popped and was replaced, it happened a second time and the electrician said he could make toast on the main board it was so hot and he wouldn't return a third time. It was only after that threat that all the space heaters in the awnings were turned off.
The voltage of the site circuit had gone so low that my AES fridge had automatically switched back to gas.

As said, a 6amp supply is more than adequate for fridge, battery charging, tv, and lights, anything more is an invitation to break out the 2kw heater and domestic electric kettle, etc.

Yes on the ehu and again on the main fuse board in reception in my case.
