Don't laugh....it really helps.

My nightly map plan involves checking where we are and where we want to be next and all points in between.
The process is often slowed as I keep losing where we are on the map and have to start again. (Cider intake doesn't help)
Anyway, two nights ago I noticed a small piece of blu-tack on the back of the map (from wall-hanging)
Eureka! A small matchhead size lump stuck where we are, likewise one stuck where we want to be
It really works, saving a lot of time and improving my humour as well
Try it yourselves, it will change your lives forever. Don't all thank me at once......

It's particularly helpful because the map of France I ordered arrived with all the place names written in French, obviously a mistake. It was too late to send it back, so my (and your mother in law's) idea really helps!
