So apparently these original Pilote windows have to much of a tint and they need to be replaced or the vehicle scrapped as they don't pass MOT in NI.

Both side windows.

What a lot of total and utter nonsense!!
Its happened before to another Pilote and the owners got it passed in Scotland. I'll be making a noise about this.

The only other vehicle I ever heard of that to happen with before was Landrover, do you know what percentage light transmission they have.

That is unbelievable and as it’s a factory fitted article I would be taking it further up the chain I’m afraid.

65% light transmission is required, but if they are original without any extra stick on tint, they were probably acceptable at the time and in the country of origin. But due to the age and the fact that its imported(I assume), a little bit of common sense should prevail.

OE windows can't be illegal. If they were the vehicle wouldn't have qualified for its Certificate of Conformity.
Any changes to required specifications can't be retrospective.
Example: pre 1970's cars don't need seat belts to pass their road worthiness test.

Get a couple of those old covid Perspex screens, bound to be plenty lying around, and replace the glass for the test.

Could it be the guys didn’t know what he was doing? Last year a young guy failed my 2CV for no belts in the back. I asked there and then to see the supervisor and he apologized to me that I was right and they amended my certificate and passed me.

I had the same problem with width markers. The van had passed about 12 times then they decided it needed width markers to pass MOT. Do you know if they tested with a machine or did the guy just look at them and decide himself

70%, I can't even tell they are tinted. No difference than the windscreen so they can be near 30% tint.

Ally as you know I saw your van at Portstewart and tho it’s tinted it is ever so suttle to the point you wouldn’t see it unless you knew it was there. I was aware as I had a very similar van up until recently.
Dig your heels in firmly and hopefully you’ll get it sorted.
It would be funny if you took it back and got a different tester who may pass it

That's my thinking, I didn't even know it was tinted. To then say its 30% tinted is a stretch, a huge one.

Talking to a guy tonight and he reckons I need a tintmaster tester and the window needs to be cleaned on both sides before testing.

I'll see what my official complaint brings.

Ally the Road Policing Unit in Steeple should have a tint tester. Give them a call and ask them if they could check it as a favour for MHCC members.

VT Failure Non Acceptance of Complaint

In respect of complaints regarding vehicle test failures (VTF), there is an official appeal process which should be exhausted before the complaints procedure is invoked. Complaints about this matter will only be accepted if the VTF Appeals process is completed.

The formal appeal must be lodged within 14 days of the test.

DVA will then offer an appointment within five working days to re-check the vehicle. The customer should be advised not to have the vehicle repaired before the appeal is considered, as any change to the vehicle may affect the outcome of the appeal.

As you have not yet availed of the Vehicle Test Fail Appeals process we are unable to accept your complaint at this time.

If after the appeal you are still not content then you can invoke the complaints process.

Your correspondence has been forwarded to the Larne Test Centre and they will contact you directly.

DVA Customer Services

So now appealing their decision.

More nonsense,

The fight continues:

Quote
I have checked the refusal notice issued on Tuesday 17th May. The side windows were measured at 55% light transmission, this figure falls well short of the 70% required for this age of vehicle under legislation . We have no way of knowing if the windows have previously been altered from standard, however all vehicles are tested as presented. This information is available on NI Direct for anyone to reference. Based on this information we have full confidence this vehicle was issued a refusal notification correctly on current legislation.

Thanks

Larne DVA

I have made it known that the vehicle has passed 26 MOT's in GB with the exact same legislation. I have now also contacted Pilote for their help in identifying that the windows are original.
