I've had a PM from another forum member but can't reply as I need 15 posts and I've only got 5. This will be number 6.

Please help me reach my goal by asking campervan based questions.

Good question. It's a panel van conversion and not something often seen. A VW Crafter XLWB (it's really a LWB Crafter with a body extension grafted on the back).

Serious van the crafter and the 5 cylinder has a lovely purr from it,
Well wear,

I had a 2006 Lt with the 2.5 5pot years ago and loved it,

I should say some more about it. (I'll be up to #15 in no time).

It's a bespoke conversion and has no gas. The thinking was that with gas I can run either bottles or LPG. Bottles take up space and need a gas locker. LPG will be a tank under the van but then where do you find it? I decided that a single fuel souce, the vans diesel tank, would be a sensible choice. Diesel is available everywhere.

VW stopped doing the 5 cylinder a few years ago, a real shame as it was a suberb motor. All the new stuff is 4 cylinder, 2 litre with 3 power choices. it's either 109hp, 140hp or 180hp. I've got the 180 which is a twin turbo unit, I've also got the 8 speed auto box.

Off grid I have a Webasto diesel hob, a non stick wok/deep pan and a non stick sauspan. Seems to cover most things. I might invest in a Ridge Monkey at some point. I get though a lot of salad so don't cook all the time. I do switch the inverter on and use the oven sometimes. It can be used off grid but I'll only do it if I'm moving on next day as it takes a big chunck out of the leisure batteries.

When is your next trip

I'm on it at the moment.

We sold our house in England and moved out at the end of July last year. We had to wait until the end of November for the van to be delivered then converted and then moved into it. The first three weeks were spent on a campsite at Heretford, England. It was close to our old house, sister in law who is our postal address, friends and the storage container where our worldly good live. We had 2 weeks in Ireland for Christmas and New Year then took the ferry from Roslare to Bilbao on Jan 5th. As I write this I've got a fantastic mountain view of the Sierra Nevada in souther Spain.

I needed to find some campsite suggestions in Ireland so Googled "motorhome forum Ireland" and here I am. It was worth it as I found out about Ferrybank in Wexford which I used before getting on the boat to Spain.

My old sprinter was XLWB 6.68mtrs.
With two 13kg propane bottles fitted in the o/s rear corner, with underslung fresh and grey water tanks.
There is no reason you couldn't have an LPG tank fitted.

Did you have the van done to your spec, ?

Who did the conversion?

It must have been a really interesting PM🤔

Some photos would be good, they are always a great reference for someone else doing a conversion.

Thanks for asking, I will. I should start a blog.

From Bilbao we've stayed inland. We've met quite a few people, English, Dutch, French and German who all say the coast is packed and they've had problems finding somewhere to stay. Apparently the Spanish Police aren't shy about fining people for illegal parking. The laws about overnight stays seem to vary between regions but in general overnight parking is OK, overnight camping isn't. Camping can be defined as doing things like using levelling ramps, sitting in a camping chair or using a wind out awning.

We've mainly been using aire's but are staying on campsite at the moment. This one: https://www.campinglaslomas.com/ . The bus stops outside and we're going shopping in Granada later. There's a Decathlon in the city centre and I need to pick up an electric adaptor. Some of the electric hook ups use an old fashioned 2 pin plug rather than the usual 3 pin. If you're coming to Spain I'd recommend bringing one.

Next on the list is data. I've got a contract with O2 in England but when roaming data is restriced to 25gb a month for 63 days then it stops. It's worth reading the terms and conditions for your mobile provider if you're roaming for an extended period. Anyway, I bought a Movistar pay as you go sim which ill get binned when it runs out because I'm having an impossible time putting credit on it. I can't install the Movistar phone app unless I change my Google account regional setting to Spain, if I do this I can't change it back for one year and I've no idea what effect this will have once I leave Spain. I opened a Movistar account on their website but when I try to put credit on the SIM it won't let me, know idea why. I can do it by phone call but it's an automated menu system in rapid fire Spanish. I did manage to get through to someone who spoke English by selecting random numbers but they were unable to help. There's a company called Lobster who have shops in Granada, I'm going to try them. www.lobster.es

Next on the shopping list is a hat or hats. I have a typical Irish complexion, very fair and can sunburn at night just thinking about the sun. I didn't bring any caps with me, big mistake. Mum was the ginger one, Dad has a fairly dark complexion. He had a bit of skin cancer removed a couple of months ago and needs radio therapy to finish the job. I took him for a hospital appointment and skin specialist suggested I should use sun cream every day, that's how fair I am.

I'm sure you all know why 15 posts is needed.

But just look how well it works! A new member has got involved more than maybe he would have, we have all got to know him a bit more, and what a great person.

Now if we could get all the lurkers to do the same 😁

Sorry all. I've been shopping and site seeing in Granada all day. As cities go wifey and I liked it and we don't normally do cities. Well worth a visit if you're ever down this way.

Back to the van. Here's some pics on the chap that did the conversion site: https://www.rhalesconversions.co.uk/volkswagen-crafter-xlwb/

I'm on a campsite at the moment and there's a German registered California, mine is nicer.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, there's no gas on the van. Cooking is on a Webasto diesel hob or electric combi oven. Heating and hot water is via a Truma 6de. All run straight from the vans fuel tank. There's 2 solar panels on the roof, I forget the rating, 2 lithium batteries at 115ah each and a 3000w inverter.
