Check out the e-lifes which are usually on one of the shopping channels, good bikes at reasonable money. Usually people selling them on Gumtree also.

Just be careful about the type of electric bike you go for. Some of them are classed the same as mopeds because they're too powerful, too fast or not just pedal assist. Can't find the links now but I've read of bikes being confiscated by the police in France and Spain.

They need to be maximum 14MPH and no self drive, they must be pedal assist, to be legal.

If you happen to be heading to France, they're very reasonable there. We bought 3, pedal assist, with lights and racks at a large Intermache a couple of years back. I think we paid about €300 each, they're still going well.

Be sure to buy a bike with disc brakes as the base to work on if you go down the Boost Bikes route. I tried to save on the bike to put more into the conversion and went for one with old school brake pads. The bike goes like stink and pulls like a train but the brakes were not designed for stopping a bike with that kind of torque bolted onto it!

thats the end of that then ,i already have two entry level mountain bikes with ordinary brake shoes , i wonder could you stick your foot in between the tyre and the forks ( like the way you done years ago when there was no brakes on your bike ) ,that would slow ye down a bit

You can still get a retro fit electric motor system fitted but not too powerful

Yes just get one with a lower powered motor. Mine is a bit over the top. The front wheel of mine has lifted off the ground at full power while towing a bike trailer full of stuff. Ordinary brakes will be fine for normal use. I hadn’t realised you already had the bikes. Give Keith at Boost Bikes a shout. I’ve sent quite a few people his way and his after care is first class. I got my bike from his 4 years ago.

I deliberately got a very pedestrian looking bike and had the battery put in a custom pannier at the back so I am able to hide it under a pannier bag. Makes it less eye catching to thieves compared to one with the battery in full view. I always remove the battery when the bike is not in use anyway.

Just one or two pieces of advice from using them.

Try to avoid a front wheel drive. They can scrabble and struggle for grip when taking off. It can get a bit wobbly if not prepared for it. The crank motors are the easiest for the user.

Don't put it off thinking you mightn't manage a bike as it's been YEARS since you were on a bike. I know people who weren't on a bike for 20 years. They tried an electric bike and have never looked back.

Some electric bikes are heavy. Just remember that if you have to lift them or store them on an external bike rack.
