Most of these rare and relatively intimate pictures of the Imperial Romanov family were taken by the head of the family and Russia’s last tsar himself, Nicholas II. An insatiable photographer, the tsar took great care of his pictures, filing them carefully in numerous albums.

He passed down his love for photography to Maria, his third daughter, who was responsible for coloring most of the pictures. Within a year of the last pictures, the Russian Revolution took place. The Tsar was forced to abdicate and the family was exiled.

Following the February Revolution, the Romanov family and their loyal servants were imprisoned in the Alexander Palace before being moved to Tobolsk and then Yekaterinburg, where they were killed, allegedly at the express command of Vladimir Lenin.

Despite being informed that “the entire family suffered the same fate as its head”, the Bolsheviks only announced Nicholas’s death, with the official press release that “Nicholas Romanov’s wife and son have been sent to a secure place.”

For over eight years, the Soviet leadership maintained a systematic web of disinformation as to the fate of the family, from claiming in September 1919 that they were murdered by left-wing revolutionaries to denying outright in April 1922 that they were dead.

They acknowledged the murders in 1926 following the publication of an investigation by a White émigré, but maintained that the bodies were destroyed and that Lenin’s Cabinet was not responsible. The Soviet cover-up of the murders fuelled rumors of survivors, leading to the emergence of Romanov impostors that drew media attention away from Soviet Russia.

The burial site was discovered in 1979 by an amateur sleuth,] but the existence of the remains was not made public until 1989, during the glasnost period. The identity of the remains was confirmed by forensic and DNA investigation. They were reburied in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg in 1998, 80 years after they were killed.

1945. My great great grandfather Osher Gelberg was the head of the medical unit in the city Mogilev, Belarus. He and just one nurse stayed behind and saved thousands of lives after the city was evacuated. He eventually died in 1945 after being brutally tortured by the Nazis.

My great grandfather David Zalivanskiy was a hero for fighting the Nazis in the war while his wife and his daughter, my grandmother Rima Mlodik were evaluated to Usbekistan and survived. David was reported missing in 1944. He was never seen again. Photo non existent.

I’m immensely proud of my ancestors and the people that came before me. Sacrifices were made. Many people died. Some survived. May this day be a warning of what might happen if we won’t stop differentiating between ‘races’, religions, gender and sexuality.

May this day be a reminder that we are all sisters and brothers. Never again. Nie wieder. Больше никогда. לעולם לא יותר

#OnThisDay in 1941, the liquidation of the Vitebsk ghetto (#Belarus) began - under the pretext of the danger of an epidemic - in an operation that would last 3 days. In fact, this declaration was a pretext to move and massacre the Jews. The extermination was carried out by Einsatzkommando 9 with the assistance of the Belarussian police. The Jews of the Vitebsk ghetto were taken to the Tulovskii ravine to the east of the city. Though the number of Jews killed there is still debated, the figure of 3000 victims is generally accepted.

The Lochnagar mine loaded with 60,000lbs of explosives and set off at 7.28am on 1st July 1916 under a German position. It left a crater 100m wide and 30m deep.

Jean Bugatti standing next to his Bugatti Royale, one of seven built, 1932.

The Bugatti Type 41, better known as the Royale, is a large luxury car built from 1927 to 1933 with a 4.3 m (169.3 in) wheelbase and 6.4 m (21 ft) overall length. It weighs approximately 3,175 kg (7,000 lb) and uses a 12.763 litre (778 cu in) straight-eight engine.

For comparison, against the Rolls-Royce Phantom VII (produced from 2003 onward), the Royale is about 20% longer, and more than 25% heavier. This makes the Royale one of the largest cars in the world.

Is that the Ulster tower Robert?
They’re both on the plaques there.
William & Isaac Black, joined up on the same day, one died July 1916 and the other a month later. They were both in the royal enniskillen fusiliers, but different battalions.
It’s a sobering place to visit, and one of those places we need to expose our consciousness to, make us realise the sacrifice made by so many so we may live so free.

I have childhood memories of travelling on those trolly busses.
A few years ago I travelled on a train in Spain with those types of seats which could be changed from sitting one side to the other.
