Drop down bed operating in reverse

 ·

Hi All,

I had a second leisure battery fitted last year. I decided to connect them in Parnell today to get the optimum efficiency. After connecting them in Parnell I connect the EHU to give them a good charge. All the electrics work fine except for the electrically operated drop down bed. When I press the down button it goes up and the up button makes it go down. When I drain some of the power from the batteries after a few hours of use the bed goes back to operating normally.

Anyone got any idea of what the issue could be?

I may be wrong but does wiring two 12v batteries in parallel not make them into a 24v power supply

Operating in reverse would suggest reverse polarity on the power supply but it should not be flipping polarity based on State of Charge.

When you connect them in parallel, you should bridge the posative terminals and the negative terminals, the feed to the van should then be connected with the positive cable on the positive terminal on one battery and the the negative cable on the negative terminal of the other battery, this balances the load and charging.

That would be in series.

2 x 12v 100AH batteries in series acts as a 24v 100AH battery

2 x 12v 100AH batteries in parallel acts as a 12v 200AH battery

Hi BM,

That’s exactly what I’ve done. It’s very strange, everything else works normally apart from the bed.

You won't notice reverse polarity on lights, etc... What else is running off the leisure battery?

I tried the tv, water pump, heating and charged my phone, all working normally.

hard to explain why voltage peak/trough would reverse polarity in a DC circuit. State of charge should be irrevelent unless the switch and system is operating via CANbus and nodes where peak voltage could cause signal issues.

My present wife suggested switching the stickers on the up and down buttons. I refrained from responding.

Good idea Tony but they would need to be magnetic as it works when the battery goes down again so would have to change back

What kind of motor(s) are used in drop downs beds, in general? Is it a standard DC motor with pulleys or chain drive? Linear actuators? Would they use AC induction motors?

I’m not posh enough to have a motorized bed so I have no idea.

I just picked up a repair from my local old-timer electrician. He has years of industrial, domestic and marine electrical experience.
While there, I mentioned your problem... he's 100% sure that the answer is dirt and possible corrosion in the actual switch box. He recommended that you remove the up/down switch cover and give all the contacts a good clean etc.
I emphasised that the problem was related to the battery charge level, he still insisted that his solution was the answer. Hope this helps!

When I don’t know what the answer is, I tend to say nothing. Agree with jjf and am not convinced it has to do with state of charge of batteries. That electrician may Very well be correct. Auto electrics and mains electrics are two quite different animals. 😁

Thanks for the advice Tony. I will have a look at the switch today.
