Hi everyone.
Recently bought a 1995 Knaus Traveller 580. Revenue have come back with a figure of 2141 which means they estimated the OMSP at 16000. Seems excessive to me. Anyone have any idea? Is it worth appealing? Thanks.

From previous topics it can be worth appealing. I'm sure someone else successfully done it on here.

Can you find simular models for sale at dealers to benchmark prices? I've successfully appealed VRT on a car using that approach.

Look for models on the same base van with comparable layouts/births/features.

Their estimate is more than likely based on todays inflated covid prices being asked on the likes of Done deal and Gumtree etc,

Appeal it as you got nothing to loose,

see if you can get a few dealers to give you a price for it and then submit that for your appeal.plus simular vans not necessarily the same. just year and style, layout.

Just remember, the VRT should be on the Open Market Selling Price, not the wishful thinking asking price often seem on Done Deal etc. and at dealers which can be discounted by up to 10% in real life.

the vrt figure is based on an already tax inclusive figure plus you must purchase the vechicle first before you know what you must pay that grinds my gears! you also must pay the vrt and then you can appeal it.

Not alone does it grind your gears it's also against all taxation conventions and is probably illegal and against your human rights. A person surely must be able to assess tax liability flowing from a transaction before committing to that transaction.

it is an illegal tax,the Irish govt lost 2 cases in the european courts over it,but the fines are tiny compared to the vrt collected so they just pay the fine!

I have a 08 Citroen relay van that I plan to convert into a campervan. I was going to go all out with shower toilet etc with a ferly high end finish, but I'm worried about the VRT that I would end up having to pay revenue for reclassification when van is finished. should I just go for a very basic conversation and pimp it up afterwords, any advice or information anyone could give me on what I should do would be great

I don't like VRT but its not illegal. Similar taxes are levied in other EU countries, some at even higher rates. There are no fines.
The only change resulting from legal challenges has been the partial VRT refund for cars being exported.

I told by a Converter, that particular game has long since being ignored by Revenue, they just charge you for best value market price.

its an illegal tax because according to the EU court, the Irish govt do not take into account the vat paid in the country where purchased when applying the tax, hence they get fined every year!

There is no VAT payable on importing a second hand vehicle from another EU country. VAT and VRT are different. There are no fines levied on Ireland for VRT. Multiple EU countries levy a registration tax similar to VRT.
