Trailer or Upplate

My motorhome is rated at 3500kg dvgw, so I can drive it on my B licence. Talking with SVtech, and looking at the Autotrail documentation, I can have this upplated to 3850 (and do the C test) as I dont want to be overloaded, and plan on going to france next year (covid permitting) and bring back lots of wine!!

I was also reading regulations, and apart from upplating, there is the option of a small trailer (<750kg dvgw) which I could use to carry things (motorbike), on existing licence, keeping the weight out of the motorhome.

There are pros and cons to both options, such as different speed limits when not towing, toll charges, who can drive the motorhome etc, but i was wondering if anyone on here had any thoughts.

Thanks in advance,
Lenny

Based in the south Ally.
The process is ok - i think i know what i need to do to get the plate changed - I was just wondering is a trailer a viable alternative to doing that - as the motorhome would stay driveable on a B licence, but is that worth the hassle of a trailer.

A trailer can be a PITA, reversing is always an issue and the smaller the trailer the harder it is. But can be very handy if you know your route and will be staying in the same place for a few days.

Personally I would uprate the weight. But then I have a 7.5tonne licence.

I put up the guide as the uprating can be done for £15, companies charge for what is just a paper exercise, but I don't know about Ireland.

As Ally said, if you have the license it might be worth up plating, bearing in mind you are decreasing the resale value of your camper and making it harder sell if it's over 3.5 ton. If you dont already have the C1 license I would go with the trailer. I done my C license last year in order to drive my current motorhome and it cost in the region of €1500, C1 isn't any cheaper.

Give a shout out to Malcolmail if he is lorking about he may give you the ins and out as he tugged a trailer all over Europe.

If you are young enough with family I'd recommend getting the licence upgrade anyway, you never know when the opportunity may arise to go for a bigger van.

+1 on the licence.

Towing a trailer can be awkward. Sat nav is not always your friend!

As Rustynutz said, though, there is a cost to getting the licence. I spent close on 1k 5 years ago to get mine.

350kg is good 3 or 4 month supply of wine. Once you only drink at the weekend, of course.

I was thinking of going for a C1 licences. Did you get many lessons for €1500?
