France this Summer

I booked for France last November and only paid the deposit - €100. We are due to travel during the 3rd week in August.

Irish Ferries have not yet come looking for the balance but it was due to be paid last week. I'm really not sure what to do. Do I just abandon the trip and lose the deposit or pay up and hope that things are going to improve.

Obviously, I would like to go. In general, in motorhomes we are would spend a significant amount of time on our own anyway. You could nearly say that we cocoon.

Of course, we would continue to practice all the safeguards that we would do while at home. I'm sure there must be many who are thinking about this at the moment.

Anyone firmed up on a decision yet?

I cancelled our trip on the day the balance was due a few weeks ago. We were due to sail with Stena from Rosslare on 1st August.

Going next Tues via chunnel for 4 weeks. Staying away from big crowds. Alps, then Dordogne then coast. Its possible to have social distance measures if you are sensible. We went to a popular MH/pub stopover spot in Ireland last week and the place was packed. Apart from the sanitisers you wouldn't know there was a virus issue. Not a single mask in sight and zero social distancing. We never stayed. We will be as safe in France as here. The winter will cone soon enough!

Irish ferries were allowing customers to bank their deposit until next year, but that was when we were supposed to travel in May. I have also received emails from one of the campsites we used last year to say they are open for business.

I would check the account of the card that you booked it on as the booking confirmation email we got said that the card the booking was made on would be automatically debited for the full amount on the balance due date.

The same here , I felt it wasn't a good idea going to a foreign country where you really don't know what's going on around you ,we are pretty self isolating alright but you have to go to supermarket etc also there could be a sudden lockdown where you are , really missing not going through 😠

I paid the balance on my Irish Ferries trip last week a day or so before the balance due date. We depart mid August, return end September. As Stephen c says check your card for possible auto payment.
We thought hard about going and on balance think the only risk that is higher than home is the staircase on the boat down to the boat decks and we intend to avoid the supplied pillows. Otherwise we find the supermarkets are more spacious and quieter than home. Some one said on another forum “shop in the English hour” ie midday to 2pm when the French are at lunch.
We don’t do cities and busy resorts and will seek quieter locations.
If the need arises we can come home early as we had to do back in March.

I'm heading out through France to Spain at the end of the week via Calais, don't intend to socialise and will only shop in supermarkets with gloves/masks etc, which is probably no more dangerous than at home. Once in Spain I will be isolated at my own place so again similar to being here.

A good suggestion - thank you, I just did that, but no charges made at this stage anyway. I think I'll hold my ground until forced to make a decision one way or the other.

Glad to see that many are going though.

With the compulsory 14 self quarantine period for Public Service workers on return and a new outbreak locking down a campsite in Spain.
I am staying put. Heading to Eyeries for the weekend will be a nice getaway at least.

This year, the plan is to stay put in France and mostly tour. I have seen advice to shop mostly between 12 and two o'clock which seems good advice.

If things start to disimprove, we definitely won't go, however, we have five weeks to decide what to do. Never heard of Eyeries. It looks like a good spot. Wouldn't mind including there on a trip.

Currently sitting half way down France so here is what I have observed so far.

Dublin to holyhead almost a ghost ship for car passengers, some wearing masks a lot not

Dover to Calais busier but not as busy as other July periods, masks compulsory and some areas closed off on the ship.

Roads are quieter with mainly lorries on them definitely fewer Motorhomes, went to an aire I have used before at St Omer and previous times hard to get a spot but only two other vans there.

Will report more as I continue on to Spain

It would be interesting to hear further reports alright, however with France not on the 'Green List' I reckon it's unlikely we'll be going.

Irish Ferries said that they would be talking the balance next Wednesday unless I call them to discuss. I'll try to get them to hold off for two weeks to see if things improve.

Enjoy your holiday, I'm sure you will have a few of us here that will be with you in spirit anyway.

It’s not a holiday as such but an essential trip to deal with the aftermath of a break in at our home in Spain. But hopefully I will get to sit back and relax by the pool at some stage

Hi Sprinter and all Irish Motorhomers and thanks again for your advices? In return, perhaps I can give you an idea of the actual situation in France.... as a result we can see an increase in Covid 19 cases. , Perhaps also due to more tests beeing carried out ?
And most certainly due to irresponsable attitudes ?

Sea shores are packed up in Britanny and also further south one would expect.

Early July, I have seen so many tourists coming to Britanny, where I live , that I've decided to drive east to the Auvergne and Cantal mountains.

Along our three weeks travel, we've stayed in different places : farms, " camping municipal" or commercial campsites. People here are very carefull: face covering nearly in every office , shops and distancing measures are applied by most people volontarily, prior to the government decisions that will be compulsory on monday to morrow.

If most events have been cancelled, restaurants and bars are open : masks are to be on as you enter or move inside, and may be removed as you are sitting .
Regarding bars, we are lucky to enjoy drinking on outdoor "terrasses" , where no mask is required, but distancing and responsible attitude is normally applied.

Camping sites : face covering while checking in or out, face covering in toilets , showers, lavatories etc.... quite nice for shaving !!!!
There we are . I hope it will help you visiting France

September , hopefully, will see some improvement, due to school return...
Have a good trip.
Regards .
Daniel

We're still going ahead mid August, booked into a site we know on the Biscarross lakes, we'll be masked up where necessary, just looking forward to some good weather and French culture as we've enjoyed it the past 12 years.

Having travelled on to Spain there were no issues with France. Diesel ranged from €1.25 to €1.55 people in general are observing social distancing with masks on

Spain, diesel is fro €0.94 to €1.15. Went to a Burger King last night near tarragona and no social distancing, no hand sanitizer but everyone had to wear a mask. That may have been a one off as I have been to diy stores and masks, distancing and hand sanitizer are a must as is paying by card, even McDonald’s are doing it.

So there you have it so far any major changes I will let everyone know but baring a total lockdown I can’t see it

Almost forgot, no border checks going from France to Spain

I don't want to cause offence, or fall out with anyone...this is just my own opinion.... bearing in mind the Government and Nphet advice regarding only essential travel abroad.
There seems to be a school of thought that says "I know the advice, I understand the reasoning, I'm aware of the risks to myself and possibly others on my return....but it doesn't really apply to me because, er, it's me."
As I said, just my opinion.

I agree wholeheartedly with that statement, personally I would not have travelled except we had to get out to asses the damage and loss to our property, while we could go by pictures sent to us it hasn’t begun to tell the whole story and the insurance bill keeps rising. We have had a couple of contractors round to carry out repairs etc and they all have been wearing masks and keeping well away from us and definitely no handshakes

Coule you visit France Last Summer ?

 ·

Hi everybody in Ireland.

I hope Joe and Flo and all of you Irish travellers could manage to visit France ....

As we had to pospone our trip to Ireland from May to September and cancel it in the end , we expect 2021 will be more lucky, although we do not think Covid will be then defeated.
What a Shame ! We are very sad with your new consignment in Ireland.
Éven more sad because France is just about to do the same ....according to the actual news.

I Wish you all the best for thé end of this year and Christmas .

So, Instead of crossing-over to Ireland , we décidéd to visit France ......Bonne idée !!!!!

We travelled all across from Britanny to the South East ( VAR département)
On our Way, a heartbraking stop at Oradour , most of the « Puys » in Auvergne, CANTAL, and via the Gorges du Tarn, Corniche des Cévennes, Pont du Gard, Arles, down to the Camargue,

A Drive along the south coast through Marseille ( to be avoided....) via Toulon led us to thé Saint Tropez area : best bet to visit Grimaud .....Monastère de la Verne , massif de l’Esterel !

Our return trip was via the Canyon du Verdon, .....carefull driving is mandatory !
then le Luberon, Vaucluse, Vaison la Romaine, superb Gorges de L’Ardeche .

Le Puy en Velay is also a must among all others .

So here are some idéas, let us pray next summer will allow your next holidays to France !

And ours to Ireland....of course.

Good luck to you all

See you hopefully next year.

Daniel

Marseille

 ·

As we had a feeling of non sécurity in Marseille à few years ago , ( we are not allowed to Say why anymore in France ...) i did not wish to drive through that Town with m’y motorhome.
So from Camargue to Toulon, if you do not want to use the motorway, you havé to drive through thé tunnel passing under thé «  vieux port ». If’you miss your way out ( which i did...) , you ‘ ll néed to drive all along thé Crowed narrow streets , up to «  la bonne mère de la garde «  cathédral » area and down before you find your way out.
Quite à chalenge .
Also, generally speaking , in view of the unsecure atmosphère regarding thé Covid , we decided to avoid large Towns as much as we could.
Towns were merely empty anyway, with mask wearing and hot Weather
For instance we were Alone in thé Arles arenas , and Vaison la Romaine roman Théâtre .

Best wishes to you too
Daniel

Daniel...I love France but I'm pretty sure i what you mean about Marseille....I felt like I was in a different country and it's not a safe feeling being there......I also went down that underpass tunnel and thought I was going to lose the top of my camper.....its pretty tight!

You’ve got it right , Panda . about Marseille.
Unfortunatly thé recent slaughter of a teacher. will not help. Neither thé actual réaction and attitude of the turkish président followed by other countries.
Until now it was : «  pas de vague » ( no trouble )

Let’ us hope things will calm down .

Back to travelling : Normandy and Britanny are , of course, very nice and worth visiting too ! And of easy access.

Good health to the Ferry compagnies.

Kenavo !
