Causeway coast and Glen council do not appear to care about the fact that the traders in Portrush will need all the trade they can get to make up for lost time due to Covid 19. With limited parking in the Aires in Portrush there was always the opportunity to go to Whiterocks as a stopover but I noticed Height barriers being erected on friday as we were working near bye.Today I was passing there and took a drive down in and both carparks
that were used by motorhomes have barriers in place with a sign saying temporary barriers ,the only thing temporary about them in my opinion is that they are temporary until more permanent ones are fitted. The horse lorry car park is still open and it had 3 motorhomes in it but it can get quite congested if the horsey people are using it.
Probably time for unwanted motorhomers to take their business elsewhere.

Not Whiterocks! That was our favourite place to visit and now we can’t even call in for a while in the Motorhome. Really sick of these height barriers now. Tempted to just sell the van as you really can’t use it at all other than to go to a campsite and walk into town.

The best thing to do is send them an email thanking them for not wanting us or our money and that there are plenty of other places who will want our custom and we will be more than glad to give them a bypass does anyone have an email address for them I’m sure the local businesses won’t be to pleased that there getting rid of there customers

The trouble with just taking our business elsewhere because we are not wanted is that it is happening more and more and soon there won't be anywhere else to take it to.

Someone received a reply.......... To an earlier email.

Quote

Good afternoon xxxx. Thank you for your message. Council had to take these measures after the carparks were misused for unauthorised overnight camping facilities. The reason for Council’s stance on overnight parking is twofold:

Firstly, Council does not want to encourage overnight camping that is to the determent to the enjoyment and access of other users to the site, primarily people wishing to access the beach and enjoy the landscape and associated activities.

Secondly, Council cannot as a managing body, allow unregulated and unmanaged use of the site for an overnight facility where there is a potential for health and safety issues to arise eg campervans or tents sited without appropriate spacing.

The measures taken are hopefully temporary and the barriers are not on a public road but on private land. It is regrettable that others have been inconvenienced and Council is concerned that further measures may have to be implemented to prevent overnight parking in the larger carpark if people persist in using it for overnight stays..

It won't take me to point out the absolute drivel and scapegoating in the reply.

Living in the area I'd have to say that we're very unlikely to get any change from the council.
The reasons given for the barriers are absolute rubbish. The real reasons are that certain
Caravan Site owners have way too much influence with the council and unfortunately anyone
standing in the coastal wards for the council would attract more votes promising a ban on motorhomes
than offering to help us.

I sincerely hope that Causeway coast and glen take a look at what Galway council in Ireland did to Motorhomers and after the backlash they were glad to change their attitude in order to get Motorhomers back.
I will never go to a campsite in Portrush in order to get a parking place,if the Aires is full i will gladly just drive on.
Pity about the traders as we always supported them on Saturday night O-) and by having breakfast on Sunday morning.
Their loss will be someone elses gain, but i will continue to be out.

It is probably hard for them to defend their present attitude.

See attached the reply i received today from Causeway Coast and Glens council to my email sent on 10th july, i have also attached my origional email to them.

Dear Norman

With reference to your query about overhead barriers at Whiterocks. Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council had to take these measures after the carparks were misused for unauthorised overnight camping facilities. The reason for Council’s stance on overnight parking is twofold:
Firstly we do not want to encourage overnight camping that is to the determent to the enjoyment and access of other users to the site, primarily people wishing to access the beach and enjoy the landscape and associated activities.
Secondly, we cannot as a managing body, allow unregulated and unmanaged use of the site for an overnight facility where there is a potential for health and safety issues to arise for example campervans or tents sited without appropriate spacing.

The measures we have taken are hopefully temporary and the barriers are not on a public road but on private land. It is regrettable that others have been inconvenienced and we are concerned that we may have to take measures to prevent overnight parking in the larger carpark if people persist in using it for overnight stays. However, in the interim can I suggest that you use this for parking if you wish to access the beach and dune area.

Yours sincerely

Hi as someone who loves to park in Portrush Aires and have a meal or a drink in town I am disappointed to see the negative attitude towards motorhomes by the Causeway Coast and Glens Council.
When the Aires is full what is wrong with going and parking at the White Rocks and walking into town?
I will never set out to annoy anyone so if this is the attitude of your council then in future I will just drive on to somewhere I feel welcome.

Kind Regards
Norman Gordon

Nonesense reply. There is so much in that email from them that makes no sense. I'm still waiting on my reply.

Are other road users more important than Motorhome road users? By that email it seems they are.

Also I have yet to see the answers to the questions asked about bylaws changed to erect barriers and the other questions in the email.

A 10 bay Aire, which I think is great btw. Is not really an answer to replace the amount of Motorhomes that used to park at Ramore head.

It's a token gesture that goes nowhere near meeting motorhome tourists needs. Tourists that spend money in local businesses when the campsites are closed out of season.

Portrush is a tourist destination that doesn't want tourists

This Morning Mon 27th July at approx 10am the Aires in Portrush was full and there were two campers sitting out in the bus park as there was nowhere for them to park. How many tried to get in there last night and just moved on?

Such a loss in revenue for Portrush. Imagine if they doubled or tripled the size of the Aire, charge £10 per night and put the money back into the town. It sure needs it, it's not exactly the most prettiest. Plus the amount of trade the visitors would create, very short sighted.

Cobh Aire in a year raised more than €20,000 for the locals and that was JUST the parking charges! Portrush is one of NI's very limited tourist destinations, why not capitalise on that.

6 motorhomes in Portrush Aire including myself at the minute. I was at Portstewart and got the bus over. When I saw there were spaces I got the next bus back and came over
