I just weighed the toolbox I carry in the van. It tipped the scales at 25 kg so I thought I would try and lighten it. It didnt work as I could think of a reason to keep most of the stuff. Admittedly there are things that are made or adapted for one specific purpose but just cant let go. Do you really need a home made oil filter wrench when on holidays. Or a tool for taking a gearbox seal out of a Metro car. Who knows Maybe!

25 kg toolbox = 25 extra bottles of wine. Just a thought.

haha, yeah that might be a little too much :)

I bought myself a toolkit from halfords that has pretty much any single basic tool that you'll need for a roadside repair and added the bear essentials like duct tape, WD40, JB weld, zipties, fuses, electrical tape, a few hose clamps, bit of wire and a 12v test light.

Then added a tyre repair kit, 12v air pump, one of those small jump start kits (looks like an USB brick) and an old dumb phone that I keep around charged just in case.

Funny thing is, most of the time I'll just use my leatherman. But I've used the toolk box once or twice and I was really happy I had them... and I was delighted to be able to help out other folks with the repair kit and jump start a car stranded at a beach in Kerry because they left the lights on and sand made it almost impossible push start the car.

Although no where near the 25kg, it does add a bit of weight but it also adds a big piece of mind... I've used the tools for small jobs here and there

I bring plenty of wine anyway. Over the years I have repaired brakes alternator fan belt water pumps and loads of other stuff. I once repaired a Fiat 128 belonging to a young couple in Yugoslavia. I ll have another look and maybe ditch a flat head screwdriver. But I might need that for something.

Lads lads. A vise grip and one Philips and one flat screwdriver is all you need, oh and maybe a lump hammer, if the vise grip is not heavy enough. 😂😂

WD40 too...

If it should move but doesn't, WD40
If it moves but shouldn't, duct tape

Always remember however that you can't fix stupid, not even with duct tape, but if you use it right, you may just be able to quiet stupid down for a little while.

A ¼" socket set, a multi-bit screwdriver set, small, medium and biggish adjustable wrenches, Stanly knife, a few spanners, pliers, other small bits & bobs, duct tape (black & clear), a multitester, WD40 and an old faithful 20 year old Leatherman.
And, most important of all, breakdown cover for when the above is no help.

That's me done

don't forget the spirit level, if you are going to lay your own hard stand when you pitch up, you'll want it to be level 😁

Breakdown card for anything more than the most basic problem.
For the very basic stuff I have a couple of screwdrivers, a shifter, zip-ties, duct tape, pliers, multimeter and a can of WD.

Oh, and a torx screwie to get at the headlight bulbs.

It’s a 16 plate van mind so hopefully won’t get much going wrong.

Roughly 2kg of tools per year (of the vehicle) would be a good rule of thumb!!
