On Feb 15th 2013 we are due for a close fly by of a 57 metre wide asteroid which will come within 21,500 miles of Earth. A bit close - I hope they have plotted this right :o

Bruce Willis is all ready suited up and ready to deal with it.

Chuck Norris is in reserve just in case Bruce gets nailed.

It's quite likely to pass in daylight but if not it will just look like a dot of light moving across the sky and might not be seen unaided. It might not move that fast across the sky either. I just hope we don't have an unwanted Valentine's pressie.

A Sense of Scale

On the subject of the moon to give you an idea of the scale of things - here is a view we often see - a full moon. The arrow is the most noticable crater on the moon Tycho with it's huge ejecta plumes radiating outwards.

The central mountain range is 1.5 km high or over 5000' and the ringed area is roughly equivalent to the Mourne Mountains at 2500' high. Now you have an idea of the scale.

Craic humour, just can't beat it. We might all die by being hit by an asteroid and we all think it's hilarious
