SORN / Declare non use

With the current state of affairs with Covid-19 and the possibility of not being able to use or motorhomes for a while then maybe getting something back for the road tax is an option.

Vehicles registered in UK/NI can make a SORN (statutory of road notification) from this link:
https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn

ROI registered vehicles can make a declaration of non use at this link:
https://www.motarviews.ie/ORD/login

May be an option for some at this time and save a few £/€ on road tax.
Stay safe out there. Hopefully see you all when this passes.

You can only tax van for a year in ROI, you'd have to take it off the road and then re tax it for a year

Jon.I don't think we would get anything on a motorhome because of the low tax we pay, but this is from their Q&A

Q17. Can I get a refund if I need to take a taxed vehicle off the road?

A17. Only if you qualify for a refund under existing rules. These include the vehicle being stolen and not recovered, scrapped or permanently exported, or if you are keeping the vehicle off the road for reasons of illness, absence from the State for business or educational purposes or for services overseas with the Defence Forces. In all of these instances, a minimum of three months must remain on the disc.
But the insurance might be worth a try.

I was about to take my van off Sorn in March or April but I will just leave it off. Probably for the whole season the way things are looking.

Surely you would need to keep the van insured. What if stolen, damaged in a storm, etc.?

I sorned yesterday as dear knows when I'll be on the road again.
It's so handy now to do online and retax when the time comes

My van is 3850kg so the rate of duty is £165 (approx). That is about £14 per month.
I decided not to sorn as I consider this to be a time when we all need to pull together.
I regard it as a monthly contribution to the increased costs of the NHS.
I suppose I am lucky in some respects to be on a company and a state pension.

This is a non political question...just a simple question... what happened to the 350 million a week the NHS was to get from Brexit?

A simple answer (hopefully) as I understand it.
The UK has not yet left the EU and I think it has to continue its contributions until the end of the transition period.
I think the £350 million quote has been picked up and given prominence by the pro EU lobby and the liberal establishment to embarrass the pro leave government, but at the end of the day it is no worse a lie than any politician in any country makes at election time.
Now that the brakes are off in terms of spending by the Uk government to survive this crisis, I would not be surprised if the government invested heavily in the NHS (as it needs to) and is able to fulfill that promise,For a while anyway and to piss off the EU lobby.
Interesting the way the EU is almost totally silent during this crisis and seems to be in huge turmoil as each country closes its backstop borders and refuses to help each other with support. (Just an observation, not a political point).

Its just when you hear of NHS nurses using bin liners as aprons etc it would make you wonder. The EU are doing as much co-operation with its member states as the US are doing with its states or the UK does with its member countries.

I suppose we all see things differently depending what colour glasses we wear :-)

It is difficult to be positive at this minute in time but if there is any good to come out of this catastrophe surely it is,we humans on this earth are only mere mortals.
If this virus catches up on any of us it will not give a damb what colour of creed we are,it will probably kill us.
Humans on this earth need to start and understand that we will only be here as long as mother nature wishes us to be.
That is my sermon for today folks.😞

Spending my time in a constructive manor after deciding that I would not be sorning the van (I began to think of practical things) and in order to save the tyres did wonder about lifting the van off its wheels any comments, maybe even buy a set of scrapper wheels/tyres so spend important time looking on E-Bay. I dont think that it will get runs out of the village as its too much faffing to get it out for a 5 mile run to the next supermarket.

I am guessing that your van does not have cp tyres which allegedly can stand unused for long periods of time. Spare wheels and tyres would certainly be an option, but is it not possible to raise the vehicle onto either axle stands or simple blocks or bricks.?
Has the added advantage of being another layer of security against theft of the vehicle.

I'm gonna get some of those rubber strips that they use for cattle to lie on, keep good pressure in the tyres and cover the tyres to keep off those pesky uV Rays. Fingers crossed it will work.

If its only the tyres getting a flat spot is your worry just move it a few few feet every week.

I thought you were building a massive chateau or something to pass the time when I first read that!

Even a few inches. I put a chalk mark on the top of a tyre and just move a quarter turn.

If you can drive it around in a circle, there is little chance of you parking on the same spot on the tyres.
