Wobble

I was going up a long drag on an autoroure in France. In the slow lane, 5th gear doing about 55mph when the front wheels started to wobble violently. I pulled over thinking it was a loose wheel. I checked the wheel nuts but all was ok and nothing obvious underneath. We had an old landrover years ago would do this the odd time but it was accepted that it was a speed wobble. I think it might have just been a combination of speed, road conditions, pulling uphill etc. Any thoughts?

Would the little piece of lead balance have come off the wheel, these can be on the inside of wheel rim

Never thought of that. It has been ok for the last 80 miles

Had the wheels balanced before I came as I changed the front and middle axle wheels around

I think you’re right Tommy.
You encountered a resonance which was probably amplified by factors such as torque, gradient, and lack of speed change. It becomes more violent until you break the cycle. Castor/Camber and KPI are designed into the system to prevent it and even road camber can make it do that.
Obvious checks, TRE, bearings, ball joints, tyre condition etc would satisfy your mind. Saw it before....... tractors notorious for it, not observed often in our type of vehicle.

I now suspect you have a bulge in one of the tyres, this can be hard to spot and is dangerous

Yes had a quick look for a bulge there is nothing obvious. Tyres are couple of years old and 7mm of tread. I ll keep an eye but it was scary at the time, felt as if the wheels would come off

Did you swap the wheels on both sides?

Yes front left to middle left. Front right to middle right. It hasnt done it again which makes me think it was what JJF said. When I get home I'll check for bulges.

Was there ruts in the road from trucks by any chance,

Years ago the road from Calais to Ostend had deep ruts from the trucks being in lane 1 most of the time,
If you let go of the wheel it would steer its self almost to Ostend until you cane to a new patch of Asphalt ,
It was a strange feeling the first time I drove on it but after that I knew what was happening,

Is it possible you hit the same thing seems it didnt do it since
