Just for information to us folk within the industries involved with vehicles in particular. As a long standing member of Irish Road Transport Engineers, SIMI, and associate member of the Engineers Institute, I find it disappointing to come across situations like I experienced last week, that being; the poor standard at the CVRT, and the fact that numerous shops decline work due to insurance issues and just not having the competent crews to take on work to the older fleet anymore.
Nonetheless, I am a Contruction Plant Fitter by trade, working in the Heavy Industrial and Engineering sector for the past 25 years. Moved off the tools a number of years ago to continue roles in Maintenance Management and Project Management, but would keep close to the hands on action in my current roles. There is an obvious niche in the marketplace for older motorhome interior and exterior overhaul work to be addressed, espically from the Midlands up towards North West in my particular research. Primarily as an avid motorhome enthuesist, and a strong supporter of having vehicles right and road worthy, I am considering creating a business in the Midlands to take on the overhaul and upgrade work to the older sector of the Irish fleet that at this stage may need some specialist and careful attention to the vehicles components.

As part of my research to see what sort of appetite there is for a Midlands - North West - North East location, I would very much value your opinion and/or interest in having a Midlands zoned depot to reach out to for your minor and major interior and exterior upgrade or replacement works that would be very reasonably costed and carried out to an impecable standard.

Duke this is a good idea. When I read the prices people are charged for services etc to their van's I am amazed. The mechanic I have used for the last 20 years is retiring this year. He has always charged me a fair price for a good job but he tells me it is harder for him to work at the newer vehicles because of the technology.

Thanks TommyS, Eirebus. I would stick to the campers only! Oooh I've had my fill of the auld Defenders!!! :).

Ally, I'll put it out there on the Facebook page and let people know the sort of costs associated with the typical minor and major overhaul works that can present as unexpected surprises or work that's 'on the long finger' while a few quid is gathered up to tackle same.
Most Timing Belt work can be done in 4 hours on most of the older machines as access is easier. Timing belt kits for the older machines are in around €250 - €300 including tensioner and idler.
Complete interior roof re-lining and re-insulation is typically 2 good days work, with materials, this work should come in around the €1000 mark.
Outer sealant - typical 1 good days work, with materials, should come in around €550 - €600.
Under Chassis steel work replacement - 2 days, again, in the region of €1000.
Under sealant, Schutz spray.... €300 all in.
The Northern regions of the country might be covered by a Donegal shop for these jobs, I don't rightly know?
The Southern region appears to have a chap in Waterford doing chassis work only.
I have been asking around through the various associations that I work within, and there does not appear to be any vehicle body shops that can do all of the work that an older machine may require all around the same time, so I will make inroads to getting numbers of interested persons who would have certain repair/replacement work to be done at some point in the next couple of years. I do understand also that the best years of motorhoming are done once retirement begins and there are just some jobs that we can't really manage safely anymore once the body gets on a bit, so I think it's paramount that this factor alone should provide a shop where a much loved and cherished machine gets what it needs at a fair price that doesn't ruin anyone's budgets for motoring around the country.

Hi Duke,

If you are Interested I have also been looking into a similar idea, we both have same trade and background, I have my own Vehicle and safety Camera business in the very early days of set up, but keen to explore other options to widen the scope of work.

I'm North Longford based, so we share the same location for set up.

If you think it's worth a chat , I would be very interested in seeing if there is something we could do.

Drop me an email pacourtney75@gmail.com

Cheers
Paul
