Insurance renewal shock

I received my renewal notice today (for March) for the Motorhome. I have been with Dolmen for about ten years and have been happy with their policy.
However, the premium last year was £247 and for the new year £297. An increase of £50 which is about 20%
I have not had any accidents in the last year, aside from a windscreen replacement on a family car which does not affect premiums.
I tried a few online sites this afternoon but no one seems to be able to quote online.
I will ring Dolmen on Monday, but I would be keen to hear if anyone else has had a similar leap in premium. Is it down to the claim and rip off culture in the south which seems to be putting all sorts of businesses and clubs out of business?

From reading between the lines it seems that is the issue.

Try one of our new discounted partners. Caravan Guard and Adrian Flux, Caravan Guards cover is meant to be really good.

I am currently with Adrian Flux and can't complain.

Davy

Just checked mine which was renewed in January 2020 at £297 with Dolmen. Three named drivers.

Mine was £297 in both 2019 and 2018, £270 in £2017, £265 in 2016, £255 in £2015, £265.20 in 2014 and 2013, £255 in 2012 and £265.20 in 2011. That’s as far back as I can find.

Based on the above you have had a good deal for the last 8 or 9 years

Thanks Petie, my policy has generally been in the low to mid two hundreds. I recall they used to publish a single figure of cost which everyone paid, but that seems to have stopped a few years back.
I did have two claims with them. One for self inflicted damage which raised my premium, but only for one year which surprised me. I also had a windscreen replacement which did not alter anything.
I am of a mind to stay with them as my dealings with them and AXA have been very straightforward. They also seem to have a good working arrangement with Donaghey’s for repairs when I requested a Hymer dealer rather than a car repairer from their panel for both incidents.
The policy is, in my view, well constructed and fit for purpose, particularly for my A class windscreen, unlimited mileage (we do about 10,000 miles per annum) and length of trips abroad. With this in mind and my belief that cheap isn’t always best, I will talk to them on Monday. I would need to be accident free for another eleven years before I had paid in more than I have benefitted so feel fairly well disposed to them.

Davy

Kabundi, just seen your post before hitting the send button on this post. I must hoke out whatever paper work I have for previous years, but it does seem like I got a good deal. Self and wife as drivers on what is now a 4 year old quite expensive Hymer A class from new.

I have done a bit of digging in the files and think I have solved the price. I only have some of the back details.
17/18 I paid £474 due to the accident, so don’t know what the base figure was.
18/19 I paid £297, but cancelled the policy last March as my renewal (May) would have occurred while away in France. They could supply me with a green card for only the period to renewal which might have caused problems if the Uk had left with no deal during my trip. I therefore cancelled the policy at the end of February and started a new one. The renewal letter I have received carries the part year figure of £247 and I now recall getting quite a good refund of the balance.
The new policy for 19/20 was indeed £297. So the moral of the story is don’t get old as you only get confused, though I do recall the £250 figure (approx) in the past.

I did just now try and obtain a quote from Caravan guard, but they failed to quote online and require a tracker be fitted before offering a quote.

So back to Dolmen who do seem from the comments here to still offer the standard All comers premium. Thanks to all for helping jog my memory and help solve my age related memory!

No Dolmen for me, they won't give us a discount.

Tracker? Hmm I wasn't asked for that with CG, is yours a ford?

I think you will find that the increase is due to the stronger £ pound versus the Euro € exchange rate.

The basic insurance premium is €350, divide this by the current exchange rate (1.17) and you will get £299, or near enough to your £297.

It's still good value!

That’s good if it includes European repatriation and full breakdown cover. This is limited on the Dolmen policy and is really inadequate.

I pay an additional £110 approx for Saga European breakdown cover (making the total just over £400). This gives me full breakdown cover, recovery and repatriation with no size or weight limit.

You've made me wonder, I'll double check, it's either all included for £270 or £90 on top for Europe breakdown cover.

Hi Davy, my insurance with Dolmen has stayed within €5/€10 of €250 over the last 5/6 years. 2009 Knaus Sun-Ti with 2 drivers. I know they charge an extra €50 if you are not a member of IMCC. Just an idea, but what about Brexit?I know thar Red Pennant Insurance no longer repatriates Campers back to the Republic since Brexit for instance. I would be interested in knowing their reply to you.
Regards

😁

Very true, but I think you get a €50 discount if you are in IMCC. Same thing I know 😂

Whereas they give MHCC nothing, zilch, zero, bugger all.

It does make me wonder.
