looking at putting in a battery monitor onto the leisure batteries could i just connect into the tv 12 volt supply or do i need to fuse it and any recommendation on a good one thanks

Ideally you want to be able to measure more than just voltage and instantaneous current. A good battery monitor will measure capacity too. To do it right you would want measure current in and out of the battery, and be able to count that current. That requires wiring in a shunt resistor. Your monitor then can tell you how many amp-hours have been consumed and what capacity remains. I use a Victron BMV-712 myself.
