Tire valve replacement costs

Sorry it’s not exactly motorhome related, but still applies. I dropped my car in to get a tire puncture repair the other day and was told by the technician that it was my valve that was leaking and to take it to my garage. The technician also said that the garage should be able to split the tire pressure sensor from the valve that needs replacing, which would reduce the cost considerably as it is then a matter of refitting the same sensor.

The garage have just been on to me to say that they are checking to see if it is covered under warranty, if not the cost of replacement would be €180. So fingers crossed. I asked about them reusing the sensor and they say it can’t be split on older models. It’s a 2014 Kia Sportage. Could I just go source a valve/sensor module online and have the tire center fit it, which they offered to with the original sensor? Or is there a lot more involved regarding coding and installing a new sensor?

New ones usually need to be coded in but its not necessarily a main dealer as some independants can do it.

A bit like car stereos then. Not necessarily tied down to a dealer but still fidley and costs a few quid. These dealers know how to charge a premium. €180 ! I could get two new tires for that. I might get lucky on the warranty but I’m not expecting it. I wonder what would make them discover whether it’s covered under warranty or not, that they need to first go have a look?

Jaysus, when will this end. It's another example of built-in sh1te which requires main dealer intervention when it goes wrong at exorbitant costs.
How did we ever survive without tyre pressure sensors, CANbus systems, paired electric window motors etc. etc.

A friend of mine tells me if he fits a different size battery or upgrades to two batteries on his Hymer the whole system needs to be reprogrammed by a dealer.

If I were the OP I'd get some whiz kid to tell the computer that there aren't any tyre pressure sensors fitted and go back to the old way of visually checking the tyres and detecting by the 'feel' of the car if one is going a bit soft.

And the irony is I retrofitted TPMS to my camper for about €20. A cheap Chinese kit consisting of 4 valve screw on sensors in place of dust caps and a little reader module. My Kia system won’t even tell me which tire is low, not to mind the pressures. The Aliexpress Job tells me everything.

try a breakers yard for the same make and model and it may work without programming

Well I can't say I really know what is involved in programming one of these. I was imagining some specialist gear to set long stringed unique identifiers, followed by license keys and the likes. But if you're telling me that a replacement might work straight off, then there can't be much that needs programming.

And then I come across links on eBay for sensor modules, that claim to be programmed for my model, all in for about €50 including delivery. Add to that a few quid for the local tire centre to fit it. No brainer or a can of worms?

Replacement sensors are about €30 to about €60 depending on system.
Coding can be done at an independent technician provided they have the gear to do it.
We code them regularly, €15 per wheel or €50 for all 4 provided you have them pre fitted before arrival... takes about 5 minutes.

If you trust yourself to check Tyre pressures you can buy a device that eliminates TPMS from your car.
https://www.tpmsbypass.com/
It’s a lot cheaper than a sensor and programming.

Jeasus lads what's wrong with checking the tyre pressure on a regular basis and forget about new technology.
If it was me I'd cut the connection and get a good compressor.

Apparently every new car from 2014 must have them fitted, in the republic anyway. For why, I have no idea

It’s mandatory under some EU regulation. Not that easy to cut the connection, they are coded into the ecu on most cars that have the Tyre sensors, some systems use rolling diameter to work out low Tyre pressures but give false alarms if the tyres have different diameters due to wear or being different models.
Personally I am fine with checking Tyre pressures manually but a lot of people aren’t capable of this seemingly so that is why they introduced this new regulation. I have seen cars with no Tyre at all and the rim worn right down being driven into the garage! How safe is that?

Good news anyway, it was covered under warranty and they replaced it. I figure it would be good to keep it working if only to comply with regulations for resale etc.

But if I had to buy and replace it’s good to know you don’t have to be tied down to a dealer. There was €100 to be saved by going on a eBay and getting someone to pop it in. That’s just on one wheel.

And so the TPMS saga continues. Following on from when the dealers replaced my sensor on one wheel, I noticed the valve on the other wheel was protruding funny. This would have been the wheel in which my local tyre sensor repaired the puncture free of charge. I came to the conclusion that the tyre center boys must have accidentally damaged that valve stem. When I pushed the air hose on to the valve, air escaped despite the nozzle being fully pushed fully home. I wasn’t going to approach the tyre center about this. They were just doing me a favour. They have repaired a few punctures for me free of charge over the years.

A few days later my TPMS dash light came on. Argh! So the damaged valve is now leaking. Back to putting air in every few days. Well I went to put air in last Friday. When I tried to apply the nozzle to the valve, the whole stem just shot out under pressure, straight across the forecourt! I couldn’t believe it. And so my tyre deflated. Out with the jack. I had to use my whole body weight to loosen the wheel nuts. Literally I was standing on the wheel brace to lever it. Eventually with all nuts removed I couldn’t get the wheel off. I just couldn’t do it. I had to call my Aviva breakdown service. The guy they sent out couldn’t believe how stuck the wheel was but at least he had the tools to deal with it, i.e. a sledge hammer. An hour and half later I’m back on the road with a spare that doesn’t have a sensor, and a wheel in the boot that doesn’t have a stem.

Back on to eBay to buy that OEM replacement for €50 which is supposedly programmed for my model. Back down to the tyre center today to get the valve/sensor fitted. And finally the moment arrives when I drive off into the sunset , only to realize that my console does not recognize the new sensor. Arghhh! These sensors are just not worth the hassle and expense. The guy who fitted it for me told me they used to always just replace the valve stem every time they put on new tyres before these expensive sensors came along.

I hope this sensor can be programmed easily in situ.

Why not just pick up a set like I got for Motorhome. Tyrepal. 4 sensors and the monitor. €80 for everything

Yeah you’re not wrong. I just thought it would be no harm to keep the original system intact. I’m still covered by Kia’s 7 year warranty. There might be T&Cs with that, I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t concern myself, but it does mean I have a warning light. Is that an NCT issue? I don’t know.

So what’s the battery life in these sensors? Is there going to be a wave of people coming down the line with dead sensors? I even came across a device for sale online that defeats your ECU’s TPMS warning light. I mean, what’s the bloody point?

No point at all, how long have we been driving with no TPMS sensors ?
As long as you do check tyre pressure on a regular basis you should be good.
This is a system designed for the numpties that never check anything

Well I’ll be darned. My eBay replacement valve/sensor suddenly synced up with my ECU after driving around for 4 days. And I had just got details back from the eBay seller on the ‘relearn’ procedure for the sensor which would have involved a dealer reprogramming the device. No need now I guess. So all sensors and valves working again.

And the moral of the story is; next time I will just replace with a sensor-less valve and live with the dash fault light.

Tpms light is an NCT failure. Just watch it before you get it tested

Is that right, even if it is an amber warning? If so, there might come a stage when I need to defeat the TPMS sensor warning system.
