LPG conversion

Hi everyone!

I have a 1981 VW Westfalia and I love it.
However one thing I dont love is its drinking problem. It's a 2.0 PETROL engine which in these times making my travels quite expensive and putting me off going.

I have been toying with the idea of getting It to run on LPG as well. Its an Aircooled engine so that might put off some installers already.

If anyone has any advice or knows recommends an installer that would be great.

Engine swapping is out the window also its and early aircooled T25 so coverting to diesel would be a big and laborious job and a newer Petrol engine would have many of the same issues also.

Hope someone has some advice for me!!

I think you would need to let us know what county you hail from to make useful suggestions.

There is a ‘feeling’ that lpg is slowly getting harder to source, for instance Shell are about to stop selling it in forecourts in GB, and there does seem to have been a decline in the number of outlets in Ireland.
Strange really since in the mad stampede to go electric, lpg is being overlooked, a pretty clean fuel and according to Calor manufactured from renewable sources.
Perhaps you should look at the spread of suppliers in your area and across the island to reassure yourself that it is a good move. There is no shortage of autogas outlets in Europe. Have a look at sites like this https://www.filllpg.co.uk/index.php?page=lpg.php to give you a feel for distribution.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm living in Co.Louth so even travelling up the north to get her converted isn't that big of an issue.
I have tried many of the southern LPG installers but they aren't interested as its converting a twin carb set up to run on LPG and its age is probably a factor also.

Theres a lot of my campers covered successfully in the UK and happily running.

Luckily and why I want to convert is that there are a goo few suppliers of LPG local to me which is great

I just checked the LPG installers in Cork, and both of the places I got quotes for converting my old chevy engine, have gone out of business!

When I worked in the Netherlands in the early 70s ,gas conversion was the in thing, in the fuel saving quest, taxis were the leaders as they mostly ran big mercs but as the small diesel engines got better the gas operation has all but died out. There are now a few big super market chains toying with electric delivery vans with Ford, so the gas demand is dropping and with it the gas in filling stations is getting replaced with charging points

Is it only me or are there less lpg refilling stations now than there was?
Two that I have used are no longer doing it, Tannaghmore filling station between Antrim and Ballymena, also the filling station on the Limivady road leaving Coleraine near the jet centre.

You are correct ngt
LPG stations In the north are getting scarce. When GO oil - LCC take over a station they do not replace the LPG pump. That's what happened in Coleraine. You can still get LPG at the filling station at Mountsandel.

Hi, I've used Autogas conversions in Portadown. Alistair is the 'go to guy' for me with American RV's. However, he's not that interested in doing them any more and gas sold his business. Not sure if they'll do them.....
