Dometic Inverter

Sorry to keep asking daft questions, but looking at this Dometic DSP412 350w inverter and (looking at the download of the operating manual) it says "Never connect more than ONE consumer device to the inverter. The connection of more than one device must be executed by an electrically qualified person....."

Can I not run an extension lead from it and run several devices simultaneously?

Again, sorry if I should know this, but I am a bit of a rookie!

It depends very much on what draw the appliances you intend to run have.
What are you planning on running with this inverter?
350w is not very much wattage.

I have a socket running off mine which only has one appliance in it at a time, but as long as the supply demanded by multiple devices does not exceed the rating of the inverter then shouldnt be a problem, but as Bounder says 350w isnt a lot

I've done a list of appliance wattages (saorview box, tv, laptop, phone charger, toothbrush charger, camera charger) which cones to a combined output of 96w (+20%) = 115w.

Now I wouldn't be using all of these at the same time.

So, my calculation is 350w would be enough.....or have I got that horribly wrong?

If any of you guys can highlight anything else I may need, I would be grateful.

Brand new to all this and haven't even had my first trip yet! That's happening the 2nd week of November btw...

Tv laptop and saorview box are the main consumers but that total seems low, I just checked my laptop power supply old hp pro book and it’s 90w on its own. I guess the only thing to do is try them out yourself and see if it trips the inverter or not.

There are a lot of inherent losses in Inverters. Even the best ones!

Try to get as much of that gear operating from your 12V leisure battery supply. For example, if your Saorview (Freeview HD) box has a 230Vac to 12Vdc supply, I'd invest in a voltage stabaliser like this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/volt-…=1-1-fkmr0

For any USB devices, especially USB-C laptops, Nintendo Switches and phones, this is great:

the other thing to take into account is the initial surge on startup for the likes of tv's etc

So!

TV 50w
Laptop 33w
Saorview box states: Power consumption 12v 1.5A...does that equate to 18w?

Total of 101w for the three biggest consumers - + 20% = around 120w.

@the fat controller - what kind of power surge can I expect? I might be wrong but I think this particular inverter stated it deals with a surge up to 700w???

Would I be better off overall getting a bigger inverter??

😵😵

Just checked and it states Peak Output Power 700w. Is that what copes with initial power surges?

I have a 150w sine wave inverter. ALL the mains sockets are powered either from the inverter or the EHU. When on inverter I can use the TV, Sky box, table lamp (with led bulb), laptop and phone chargers all at once without overloading it.
I power is needed for domestic appliances like microwave, low wattage kettle, toaster, coffee maker etc. a 1500w or more is necessary.
I can't see the use of inverters between 150/250w and 1500w.

Thanks for that Baguette.

Been looking at no end of articles and You Tube clips on this subject and from what I can see, with the total output wattage of the appliances I've listed (113w) a 350w would be plenty.

I'm guessing running an extension lead from the inverter with 4 sockets at the appliance end would work fine??

For what you state, that will be perfect. Bigger is always better. No. You are spot on for your load

I hope you can follow this.
All my sockets run from the same 10 amp trip rated (C10) MCB, that MCB is only for the sockets nothing else is run from it.
I disconnected the supply to the socket ring from the MCB and fitted a 13amp plug to the disconnected cable (it needed to be extended to reach the inverter)
From the MCB I wired one 13amp socket to a position next to the inverter.
When on ehu the plug is in the socket from the MCB = all sockets in the mh are mains powered.
When not on ehu the plug is in the inverter = all sockets in the mh are inverter powered.

The above means there is no need for extension leads or seperate sockets from the inverter.

PS.
You must make sure the fridge, battery charger and heating are not supplied from the same MCB from which the sockets you will be powering from the inverter are connected.

Disclaimer.
If you electrocute yourself or set your mh on fire it's on your own head, I take no responsibility.

I’ve fitted one of these. Crossover switch.
On position to the left it’s normal hook up, on position to the right it’s on the inverter. The 240v inverter output is fed thru a dual NC relay so the fridge and the on board charger can not deploy when run on the inverter. Leaves van with full mains power to all sockets when run on inverter.

Thanks Baguette.

Followed it, but ain't doing it! 😱

If I ever get that done, I will get an auto-electrician to do it ☺

I'll see how I go with an extension lead first.

Btw, that Dometic DSP412 350w inverter.....does it have a three pin UK/Ireland ac outlet? Or is it a two pin?

Can't really tell from the image/description...
