1156 filament bulb - LED replacement

I've been playing with the idea of changing the interior lamps over to LED bulbs. I counted fifteen 12volt lamps in total. 3 double lamps and the rest single lamps. They ALL use 1156 bulbs, similar to standard 21w car indicator bulbs. Thats a potential of 315 watts or 26 amps!!

A similar double lamp;

Now I really like the warm yellow glow that these lamps currently give off so I'm keen on keeping that same colour light in the camper if possible.. That leads me to a cunundrum... Most of the 1156 LED alternative bulbs I've found on ebay and elsewhere are listed as "cool white" or "ice white" which to my knowledge, would be closer to pure white or blue in the colour spectrum.

Not where I want to go...

Have any of you replaced your filament bulbs with LED and been specifically looking to maintain the warm light colour in your coach? I'd be interested in your feedback!

BTW - I ordered a pair of these from ebay just for sh*ts n giggles. The listing says "warm white" but I wont know for sure until they arrive. I'll report back when they do.

Darn,

i eventually got an email back from the seller telling me the bulbs are 4000-5000k in colour temp... Not exactly "warm white"... Darn it. :(

I'm looking for more in the 2000-3000K range... We'll have a lookit when they arrive anyway just to see how they look...

With the diffuser covers on your light fittings, you may find that the light exiting the cover will have changed slightly in colour

Well the LED bulbs arrived from china today. I haven't made up my mind yet. The LED's aren't as bright OR as "warm" as the incandesent bulbs BUT the tradeoff in terms of power saving, I think they're ok...

Definitely a lot better than the blue tinted LED's I've tried previously.

A few pics...

LED bulb on left, Incandesent bulb on right.

LED bulb on left, Incandesent bulb on right (same colour & type of diffuser cover on both light fittings)

(2 Incandesent bulbs)

(2 LED bulbs)

Look quite good

The difference in power will be worth it, I ordered some LED's for mine still waiting on them arriving.

LED look good in the pics, if you might need a bit more light for reading etc you could install a couple of wee spot lights just to supplement the lighting.
Nice work

There's more of these 12v lamps fitted underneath the lockers in the back of the camper but I haven't put LED's here yet. They're switched off for the pic.

I only got two LED bulbs initially just to check the colour and brightness which I think is adequate. There's probably 20% less light from these compared to a standard bulb but that's ok. I'm happy enough with them so I've ordered another few...

How long they'll last, I don't know but sher nothing ventured nothing gained.

I was interested in LED bulbs to replace the normal bulbs in the van lights, so I spoke with North Down Motor Factors in Ards who rang the manufacturers. The two issues were brightness - the LEDs are not yet available that can replace headlight bulbs, but it is possible to replace them in theory for tail lights, number plates and indicators however is the dimmer light going to mean a poorer safety factor for visibility in mist, fog, or rain, and in a lot of vehicles the failed bulb detection works on a drop in current, which means lights on on your dashboard indicating bulb failures when you replace with LEDs.

Tail lights , indicators are an easy fix on the failed bulb detection and also the indicator relays by fitting a resistor across the load. I done this with a couple of classic cars a few years back. Head light wise led will be years away from replacing halogen or zeon.

How has the brightness worked Robbie? I'd be worried about visibility as the van is black.

brighter than what was in before, ie a single bulb, The replacement housing was a block with 64 superbright leds in it.
I,ll try and find pics, though they may have been lost with my old hard drive. but like the ones below which i modified the housing on the brake and indicator to fit.

I've tried several different ebay 'stop/tail' LED bulbs and they all were poor in comparison to the standard bulbs. The light from the LED's just doesn't fill the tail lamp as well as the ordinary bulbs... I guess the reflectors and lenses on the older vehicle lamps are designed for a single point of light (filament) where as the LED bulbs have an array of LED's scattered over a larger surface area on the 'bulb' which just don't work as well with the reflectors...

i wanted to swop out the bulbs on my old bikes to ease up on the charging systems but I wasn't satisfied with the result so I reverted back to standard bulbs, they're a lot brighter.

The most successful LED stop/tail light conversions I've seen involved a lot of DIY work. i.e. cutting out the back of the vehicles lamp and fitting an array of LED's to a flat PCB surface and fitting this to the modified lamp. The end result is fantastic, but a lot of work (a LOT more than just swopping out a bulb.)

Cheers Blag. I guess it's early days yet. I'll be sticking to the standard bulbs too.

For a brighter alternative to the LED bulbs discussed above, see here -

forum/topic.php?t=3403&highlig…#last_post

(Similar colour temp and similar light output to a filament bulb, but only 3.3w... Happy camper....)
