Dash cams may seem like the latest motoring fad, but in actual fact they’re becoming a must-have bit of kit when it comes to keeping you safe on the roads.

Not only have studies shown installing a dash cam makes motorists drive more safely, they can also save you money if you’re involved in a collision that isn’t your fault.

But with so many dash cams to choose from, which one should you buy? We take a look at 10 of the best dash cams on sale this year…

I have the Yi for a couple of years now in my car, never needed to review any footage of consequence, but it's a decent piece of kit at the price.

It could also work as a reversing camera mounted inside a rear window, it creates it's own wifi hotspot and you can view a live feed on your phone/tablet.

Wouldn’t be without one. We have 3! One in the van (no longer available) and one in each of the cars (nextbase, but can’t recall model). Not had to use one in anger, but if you tour abroad be aware that they are illegal in some countries and tolerated in others.

https://www.which.co.uk/news/2…in-europe/

I bought my 2 nextbase cams from Halfords together along with hardwire kits and was able to negotiate a discount.

Another vote for the Yi. Have one and so does my dad.

£30 (+10 for the microUSB fixed power lead) odd quid well spent

I have the 512GW Nextbase on a X250 Ducato.

It was permanently wired by Halfords and switches on and off with the ignition.

The camera is mounted on the self adhesive powered mount which comes in the kit. The original rear view mirror was removed (just slides off by pushing the mirror upwards) from its mount, leaving the mirror mount still fixed to the windscreen. The camera mount is stuck to the windshield immediately below the rear view mirror mount. In this position with the camera removed the camera mount can be folded against the windscreen to allow the Remis blinds to close across. This was the only location I could find where the mount could be fixed and permanently wired and still allow the blinds to close.

I have a Garmin 55, I find it very good quality. It does what it is supposed too. It is voice operated but I had to turn that off when in a Merceds sprinter, it kept doing stuff with the radio on, thinking I was talking.

I got an email link about the details in post one, hence posting it and then I found out my garmin 55 whicvh I had'ne been using! Going to put i ton the van today and try it over the weekend with voice enabled.

What the legality about using dashcams in France/Europe? Is it just that you cannot publish the footage?

I got the missus to collect my Nextcam 612gw from Halfords on offer at £109 and thought that’s a good deal. No no no! Now I need a 64/128GB U3 class microSD and no they didn’t point that out at the till. No idea how much they cost but I’m in two minds to plonk it back on their counter tomorrow and get a refund.
Don’t get me wrong it may be worth the money but why hide the fact I needed to get an SD card.
😠

Make sure its at least a class 10 SD card at that, or the camera will throw up an error because it cant write to the card quick enough,

Not sure are they hiding anything tbh. I've never seen a dash cam come with a card unless it was a packaged bundle and priced as such

I take your point essjay but I’ve never bought one before. It’s a bit like buying an all singing all dancing motorhome but no we don’t supply the engine, you need to buy that separate!
