Great but would they not be better getting the packaging reduced to start with? they could make a huge start in that.

Agreed. But in the mean time I'll carry on with my own little protest, as soon as I pass through checkout after paying I remove all the excess packaging and leave it there. :-)

That is the only way to tackle this. It has to come top down. From government and multinationals. Putting the onus on consumers to recycle will never fix the problem. We need laws that say come up with an alternative to plastic.

Saw it in lidl last week, great initiative. To be fair I presume they source suppliers based on price and therefore accept packaging as part of what they receive. If we shopped there regularly wed have a fair bit less rubbish in the house!

McDonald’s have been doing that for a few years now when you finish your meal you separate it into different places,I know a lot of people don’t like McDonald’s but everything you get your food or drink in is recyclable pity the people who get carry outs throw it out of there cars along the road

SOME people who get carry outs throw it out of their cars. People with no upbringing and no care for anything or anyone.

Thinking of waste and living at the distance from town of eating a carryout and chucking it out the window,I appreciate the people who go out for free on saturday and keep the roadside clean. One of the things that is overlooked is glass,a fully recycleable packaging, thing like salt, pepper etc that all come in plastic containers. I know it is heavier but it will not float around the oceans for a lifetime.

We live approx 9 miles from Ballymena and believe that to be about the driving time required to eat a KFC or a Mcdonalds.
The reason I say that is these food packaging are regularly discarded on our road.

Discarding packaging or "Waste" as some people are now calling it has a number of drawbacks.
You lose

1 Proof of purchase
2 No information on Expiry / best before date.
3 Country of Origin
4 Producer information
5 List of ingredients
6 Breakdown of contents.

It's a retailers dream as you have no proof that the product you have is the product they sold you.

We get home deliveries so are rarely in a supermarket but sometimes they still put some items, especially meat inside extra plastic bags!

I helped out with an annual Tidy NI survey once to statistically see which towns where the tidiest - litter wise etc. A huge amount of the litter could only have come from people in cars. Cigarette butts were among the most common (didn’t even count chewing gum) but unlike plastic I assume they biodegrade eventually at least. Not saying it is ok to fire cigarette butts away of course.

I’ll bare that in mind the next time I need to return my apples. Just sell them loose and offer paper bags. I’d be happy with that.

I operate on the principle that I only buy what's in the package, so when it is taken out to be used the packaging is bagged and returned to the Supermarket on the next trip. I have never actually had a bin.

While one can only have sympathy with your condition surely the human race is going to destroy itself.
There are so many forms of cleansing these days that our immune systems are becoming weaker and weaker.
We cannot all be wrapped in a capsule 24hrs a day.

Got to agree with you NGT, Believe it or not we are getting too clean and weakening our immune system, As a child we played in the street, ran the fields and scrumped the orchards. Being as it was wartime ,second hand clothes were worn till there was no life left in them or passed on if there was. But thank God I am still here almost 82 to tell the tale.
