For various reasons , we are only now getting ready for the first time this year. I rolled out the awning and found some mould on both sides. Is this a common problem and what is the best method of cleaning. I used bathroom mould spray, just hope I haven't damaged it.

The most likely cause of the mould is that the awning has been rolled up when wet and not been rolled out again to dry.

I had the same problem a couple years ago. Rolled up a wet awning and forgot about it until the following spring.
Ally suggested at the time to scrub the awning with warm water and a weak solution of jeyes fluid.
It worked brilliantly but was slightly smelly for a few weeks afterwards.

I followed a tip I saw online where I used a long handled brush with a bucket of water and some bleach and washed the whole thing top and bottom. The extra trick was to roll the awning up wet with the bleach water and leave it for an hour or so. Then roll it back out, brush it down with fresh water and leave it out to dry.

Take a good look at what you have got because the treatment is not the same.
One of the most important ways one can tell mold from mildew is how each fungus looks. Mildew is typically white, gray or yellow and grows on the surface of moist, warm areas. ... On the other hand, mold tends to be green or black, and it usually grows underneath the surface of anything that has gotten wet.

The other one to watch for is even when dry and a bird has decided to have a sh it on your awning roof.
If this is rolled up for any length of time it will have burnt in and will not be able to be removed.
