Can you run the Truma combi c without water in it for "heating" only I can't see any info in the instructions about this possibility, it's just so much quicker to heat if you were doing work in the van without having to put water in and out in freezing weather

The definite answer is Yes!
When we were at the NEC in February I went on to the Truma stand and asked that very question, the young lady took me over to a cut away model of the boiler and showed me how it all works with or without water. We were then joined by someone she said was from the technical dept. and he confirmed what she just said, so unless your boiler is very old and a different model I would say yes.

Mine is older than yours Dave and mine does. A little bit of a hot smell though when no water in the system
