First stop after Cherbourg

We are planning our first French trip in June. Ferry booked, Stena from Roslare. Two questions; we have two small dogs travelling with us. We will have all the paperwork and vet checks done, the question is do we kennel them or leave them in the motorhome on the ferry? The second is looking for suggestions about our first night stop. We will Dock about 4.30 pm
And would like to do about two hours driving before we stop. We are heading south along the west coast. Thanks. Really looking forward to the trip.

If you leave the dogs in your Motorhome they are likely to be there for up to 18 hours without access which may not be a good idea. You may need to review your booking to ensure that you have booked kennel space for the dogs as there are a limited number of kennels.

Simply look about 2 hours drive radius from Cherbourg and then look at searchforsites.co.uk you will find a selection of Aires and campsites from which it should be easy to select. Shouldn’t need to book ahead in June.

Hi, lots of options re:stops. One we use on that route if the sailing arrives late(ish) to Cherbourg is Montebourg, about an hour out of Cherbourg towards Caen. Free aire with all services except EHU. Nice town for supplies, good area for pets.
There is lots of places to stop, get park4night app and campercontact app.... Paid versions will only cost you about €12 total...... Really worth it.

If your travelling on the Horizon you have the option to take kennels on level 5, but ASK THE DECK STAFF for the kennels downstairs on level 4, much tidier and quiet and access to outer deck. Folk usually don't know about those, they're better than the other kennels.
Take your own dog beds for them to lie on, also fresh water and their food as you won't get access to your van once you leave it......... We used those kennels on deck 4 on our return journey a few weeks ago and they're fine.
If you choose to leave the dogs in the van you will get 2 visits for about 15 minutes each to walk them, feed them and that's all. Usually at 10pm and 10am.... But could be any, depending on sailing times.

Enjoy your trip. Keep us updated on here.

We always leave the dogs in the van now they are much happier in familiar surroundings and we get to walk them twice on the crossing unless the weather is rough, Mt Saint Michel area is a good place to stay plenty of choice of Aires / Campsites as its your first trip you'll probably stop here anyway about 2 hours drive on motorway ( toll free)

In the past but our dogs are small Shitztzu’s I have just taken the. Up to the cabin and they are the happiest there. No one has told me not to not that anyone has seen me. 😂 I know they would bark all night in kennels and I would not want them anywhere else.

You can walk the dogs twice during the crossing and are escorted down to the car deck by a member of staff. If they are happy enough and can last in the Motorhome, they will be much happier there. Mont Saint Michel is worth a stop on the way down especially if it is your first time (allow 2.5 hours).

We were on ACSI site in Granville on West side going down from Cherbourg. Good supermarket on main road.
There is an Aire up in the fortification area up on headland in the town of Granville.
If planning on campsites buy the ACSI book, discount available up till early July. Check out ACSI.eu, click on CampingCard
Though friends bought the version that covers Western Europe only but gives all possible camping (I think it covers non ACSI discount sites, Aires)

thats the beauty of the Aires in France, if one is full or you dont like the look of it there will be another not too far away and failing those the municipal campsites are good value

We've used the Aire in Granville before, it's a bit of a walk from the town up on a headland so make sure to stop at a supermarket before hand if you need to, I can't remember what if any services are here.

Another option that we've used that hasn't been mentioned is Fougeres, it's a free Aire in a really quaint medieval town. It's very close to the castle and there's a few restaurants close by. Definitely fresh water and grey/black water dump here.

One which I have used several times is Nozay 91620, On the N137 300 kilometers from Cherbourg , between Rennes and Nantes, a nice little site beside a lake with a ECH included . Last time I was there about 6 euros per night and no hurry to leave in the morning. You pay by card at the gate ,Barclaycard will do if you do not have a european bank card, it also works on Autoroutes. Really nice place and a good sized supermarket a SuperU with fuel, just down the road. Handy for The Wildlife Park, San Nazaire , La Baulle and the Atlantic Coast.
