Best place for Motorhome Breakdown Recovery.

 ·

Just got a renewal quote for Breakdown Recovery from A Plan Insurance and it's fierce high.

Can anyone on here recommend a Company who might give me a reasonable quote?

Really I just don't want to be stuck away from home or stranded on a motorway.

Not so worried about Home Start. Plenty of jump leads and I could just go back to bed.

I am in Northern Ireland if that makes any difference.

Thank you.

Yeah, you’re correct, it’s over 50 only.

Aliphatcamper, maybe the other half would qualify?????

I've had the privilege of meeting BettySwollocks and viewing his fine MH and motorbike combination.

Very flattered to be described as 49 but I was that age once but a good few years ago.

Gonna ring my insurer again to see what they have to offer

Will report back.

Oh, I see.

Don't go by my profile. I'm basically honest it on forums like Face-ache I tweak my details so that info about me can't be so easily harvested.

I look at what some people put on Facebook and it's crazy.

Here's our house and we're going on holiday and here's a couple of photographs of our kids and the school they go to, "don't they look cute in their uniforms"? Their names are Floella and Cuthbert.

Does Saga work for residents in the South or is it only for UK residents?

I'm still hunting for cover.

My Motorhome insurance provider has quoted £25 for €250 of cover. You get towed or recovered, pay the bill and they reimburse you up to €250.

Not great and I only get that because my MH is less than 3.5 Tons and so is regarded as a big car.

A-plan have quoted £115 for a bells and whistles policy that covers all of Europe.

UK only, I specifically asked last year and they won’t cover ROI residents

The Dolmen policy is OK for breakdown asssitance and it also covers Europe.

Where it falls down is on recovery, there is a very low limit (€500?). This might cover recovery to the nearest repairer but it will be totally inadequate if your MH became immobile and had to be recovered back to your home address.

Many policies limit length and weight so that also needs to be taken into account.

Saga have two policies one for Europe (PLUS) and one for UK only and don’t have many restrictions re length/weight

Dolmens limit is €650 per claim. The main question asked is the lenght of overhang pass the rear wheels and the ground clearance of the rear bumper.
I had to use it last September to be recovered with a blown engine, just 3 weeks into a renewal.
A few weeks ago, when booking Irish Ferries for a French sailing we included their own breakdown assistance insurance on the booking.

I will try to link the policy booklet.

Just to bear in mind, the day of expecting the insurance company to pick up everything for free is long gone.

The cost of a recovery truck is roughly, €50 call out fee and then €100 per hour. Remember that the return trip for the truck has to be factored into the journey. These are the same rates that general haulage companies use to price jobs across Europe. The days of the per mile rate is only applicable to taxi.

Should I be unluckily breakdown in Europe, my intention is to use the Alliance/Irish Ferries policy to get me as near to Cherbourg as possible and then use Dolmens for the rest of the way. Once the wagon is in Cherbourg port it is Irish Ferries problem to load it onto the boat.

After you have used your insurance allowance on a claim to recover, it is possible to pay the balance of the trip directly to the insurance company using your credit card. This ensures that you get the best rates of haulage available.
The only snag is that you must have a delivery address. Mine will be Cherbourg port.

I looked at that but the vehicle must be no more than 10 years old unfortunately and that rules us out.

Well my Motorhome is 24 years old.

No engine management light, ABS light, air mass meter or any of the various gubbins fitted to modern vehicles to go wrong.

It's a well maintained old school diesel and I reckon is as reliable and much more "fixable at the roadside" than a modern vehicle.

Also I wouldn't be calling out a recovery truck to change a puncture.

I'm with Brittania, they cover up to 7.5 tonne motorhomes and doesn't matter what age. Quite expensive at, from memory, £130 per annum euro wide cover with repatriation.

I had Britannia on the car and then the motorhome and it recovered the car from Dublin airport back to Moira without issue or increase in premium, caouldnt fault it. I am now with ADAC and do not intend to let that one lapse!!!
