Storage door rear locks

 ·
Posted: 03.01.2019  ·  #1
I have a 2004 lunar champ a670r camper and I am looking to change the barrels or locks on the 2 side rear storage compartments as they are sized up fully. The key that fitted them was a vecam key and the locks are 32mm long. I am either looking for 4 new barrels with the same key or else 4 new locks with barrels and keys to suit.
Where should I be looking for new locks or barrels ?

I ordered a number of those Zadi lock barrels and a lock removal tool from eBay. Easy job once you get the knack of the removal!

Thanks MickyMac - I'll have a look on eBay for them now and see if I can find an advert with dimensions for them.

Have a look at Charles Camping website /spare parts /door locks. they show several types of Zadi and WD barrels.

Before you run off to dealer or to the Internet, bring your barrel to a locksmith. Not a key cutter that you see in a shopping centre.
The barrel in your photos is very commonly used, school lockers, electrical cabinets, toolbox chests.
The reason that your barrel is longer, is to allow for a longer key, which is more secure.
However there are 2 potential pitfalls to watch out for.
The new barrels may have different keys for each one.
Or if you get what the industry call, " key alike " barrels where one key fits all, it could be an universal key fit, you and god knows who else could open it.
If you are ordering from a dealer, on your existing key there will be a number stamped into it. Ask for barrels to suit this code.

Could a good locksmith get 4 new barrels with a unique key for them - I assume he could key 4 barrels to match ?
I have put a fiamma safe lock onto each of the back storage doors now too so that would have to be opened first before these 2 door locks.

A good locksmith and to be honest most barely competent ones should be able to take one barrel, crack it open, measure the pins and then create multiple keyed alike barrels.

I've cracked open a few old lock barrels out of curiosity in the past, there's nothing complex in there.

I think there is a good locksmith in Athlone called Harneys so I could try them, I have a local one but he's young and I don't think the best as yet.

Can you remove them and put them steeping in a penetrating fluid, they might free out.

I a problem with one of the locks on the garage door a couple of years ago. The key was 'notchy' going in, in fact, it refused to go fully in and obviously wouldn't turn.
Five minutes with WD 40 and repeatedly pushing the key in and out freed everything up, working perfectly since.

Update: Went to 2 locksmiths, one of which has a great setup and 3 locksmiths employed.
Neither would take out the barrels for me, both said to get new barrels would be very expensive and both said they would try and organise replacement locks/prices for me next week.

Don’t even think about paying more than a tenner per lock. I got mine (fap) from caravan spares. For €8 each. Hired the special keys to remove them( deposit €40-€50) can’t remember which, that is returned to you, bar €8-€10 for the hire. I got replicas cut from master keys, while I had them, for future reference, popped out the old, popped in the new, job done. Even got 2 matching for the main garage, so one key does both

No luck with 2 locksmiths, did a lot of searching online and come across this US company - https://shoprvlocks.com/

Ordered Thursday morning, shipped Friday and delivered today and fit perfectly as they have so many options for the lock lengths and cams.

That's great normally locksmith will take 3-4 days to deliver it but you have got it really quick.
