EHU Not charging leisure battery

 ·
Posted: 20.11.2018  ·  #1
Hi,

I have a 00 Knaus Sun Traveller.
My leisure battery is not charging while on ehu nor are any of the 3 prong plugs usable.
I have changed the fuses under the seat in the van and by the leisure battery in the back.
Is my convertor shot or am I missing something???
Thanks!

Were those the fuses on the consumer unit? There may also be a trip switch that can be reset.

Look for a trip switch, house type. Maybe back to back with where you plug in for EHU. It’s most likely dropped out

Consumer unit, whats that? I do have a box with fuses by it and a red power switch, I don't see any trip switch on it.

If it's on the inside of where you plug the EHU cord. That's it. 240v. Try flicking the red switch off and on again. Then check the 20amp fuses (or whatever they are).

By my reading, there is no leisure battery charging and none of your 220 volt sockets are not working in your camper.
Start with your hookup lead. Check the full lenght that it is not cut or cracked. Check both socket and plug at each end thet there is not a loose wire. If your are using an adapter lead, household square pin to ble round barrel, check the 13 amp fuse in the household plug.
Inside your camper there will be a mains distribution board with ecb and a rcd trip switches, (smaller version of a household fuse board ). One of these may have tripped down.
Malcolm
Ps, car type fuses, pastic coloured blade type, are only for the 12 volts systems, internal lights, water pump, etc.

So, trip switchs are all up so not them. I never even considered the cable but I'm going to check that once I drop the kids to school!
Thanks for all the advice

Just as Malcolm has said. Work on the assumption that you have no power going to the van and start with the hook up cable. If you have a spare hook up cable try that. If that solves problem then check the 13a fuse in plug and then connections on both ends of other cable. If hook up cable not problem then it's in the van either cabling to the trip switch or trip switch itself.

If you have a spare length of cable, re-attach the blue connectors to it, after checking fuses. I would bet money thats where the problem is, the connectors or the lead.

Definitely grab a multimeter and start chasing it from the cable down. As they mentioned above, even if the breakers look OK, reset them anyways just in case, also check if there's a switch at the convertor, mine has one to turn it on and off... worth taking a look.

Then as I said it'll be a matter of chasing continuity and voltage from the cable, to plug and the way down, should be pretty handy to find where it's stopping.

Cheers,
Rami

So, I borrowed an EHU cable and the 220 volt plugs work but the leisure battery is still not charging. The fridge is also working so there is power coming in. I started the van and put a multimeter on the leisure battery which showed it charging. I have to order a 50amp fuse which I'll use to replace the one by the battery. I'll update as I work away.

If fridge is working, are 230 volt sockets working. Maybe the charger has packed in, or maybe a loose connection or blown fuse. If you could find the charger and check is there power going in, and 12 -13 volts coming out, that might steer you in the right direction

Nigel, can you post a couple of photos of your charger and your 220 volt fuse panel?
Most chargers have an off switch, older chargers didn't automatically switch off when batteries fully charge, so it was up to the user to switch off the charger when on constant hookup to prevent overcharging. Little finger could have accidentally pressed a switch.
Also older fuse panels the ecb could be 10 ( or less) amp rating which do not support domestic kettles, etc. hense why the internal sockets are not working.
I know that this is a pain in the ass, but there are enough of brains here to work it out for you.

As its a Knaus I would say its a Calira charger and they can quit (i know from personal experience) everything else will work except charge the batteries. You can get them repaired as I did or fit a new brand of charger leaving the Calira in place to control everything else. A&N Caravans in the UK do a recon unit but they are not cheap, if I remember right in the region of £300

No idea how to post pictures, charger is a Calira. There is a big red switch on/off beside it and a set of fuses. Switch is on.
I started the van and put a multimeter on the battery and it was charging so I'm beginning to suspect the Calira.
All switches in the fusebox are up.

Just to update, the Calira charger is knackered and maybe the leisure. I'm dropping it up to Maynooth motorhomes on Monday to take a look. I was planning to bring it up for some work anyway.
Thanks for the help and advice.

So....
The charger is US and their fitting a charger to piggyback the distributor.

We had got a smell of gas and it turned out the connection between van and cylinder was cracked, plus we were using the wrong gas!! New pipe and connection, problem solved.

In addition I got the rear window resealed.

Positives, I now know a lot more about my van which I've had for two years and enjoyed every moment. Campervan hasn't given a bit of bother otherwise considering its 18 yrs old.

Ger and the lads at Maynooth motorhomes provided a great service as always.

Thanks for all the advice!

Do you have an explanation for "using the wrong gas " what wrong gas?
