Charging on hook up

Hi. I’m a bit flummoxed. When hooked up the battery either decides to charge or doesn’t. I have identified the fuse for the electric step up (25A) but it looks fine. I have changed it and thought that had solved it, but it still chooses whether to charge or not. Where do I look next?

Hi. As far as I know, if the hook up is very low feed, it won't charge if anything else is turned on, and using the small feed from the hook up.

Can I ask which battery are you talking about habitation or cab
Do you have solar
How old is your van it does help if you add more details to your profile

Have you had the battery checked and how old is it.

If the battery is already charged, as in finished charging, any dial/meter which displays the amount of charge going in will show zero, or thereabouts

A smart charger will decide when and how much charge a battery requires automatically. Is your battery running out of power?

Thanks folks. I am beginning to think I am imagining it. It is definitely taking some charge, but it is slow and erratic. I will try to answer questions a bit later...

It’s a brand new Rolls battery, and is also charging from 240 solar. In sunshine we get a reading of 13.5 v, but now on mains charge only 12.8. Does that help?

Steve, The charger in the van and all normal types will start off on a flat battery at about 3 to 4 amp charge and gradually come down to .5 as the battery volts, rises hence the name trickle charge, you can leave it on without damaging the battery. It depends on the charger setting as to when it decreases the charge. If you leave it on for a day, check before and after and you will see if it is different. I think a 12 volt battery is 12.8 fully charged. The sat produces 13.5 is to overcome the resistance as does an alternator.
