I know this has probably been asked a million times, but am I right thinking that 65 psi is the right pressure for
Hankook 225 70 r15c 112 1105 tyres.
I'm getting 65 psi but I'm being told 80 psi is closer the mark.

It's what suits your vehicle.

80 is very high for your size of Motorhome I would think, you'll know, it'll be as hard as a rock and noisy. It should say in a Hymer manual.

Tyre pressures depend on the weight imposed on that axle and the manufacturer. I run on Michelin Agilis camping. They have extra reinforced walls and are made for standing for long periods thus the 79.5 psi. Your 65psi sounds about right but if you weigh your axles by driving your front wheels on to a weighing machine and then both ,by subtraction you separate and email the results to your tyre manufacturer ,they will give you the correct running pressures

Tyre Pressure

Having had the Bailey 745 over a year without checking the tyre pressure I decided to do it the other day.
Called with my local tyre fitter and discovered the pressure was exactly as stated on the cab door post.
69 psi front and 80 psi rear.
One of the lads came out to have a look round the van and asked me what pressure I was putting in them and I said as recommended . His answer was, far to high we only put 90 psi in a lorry tyre !!.
He suggested 60 psi all round but I thought it a bit low so put 65 psi all round.
Must say it has made a vast improvement to the comfort and stability.
On a recent weighbridge weight check I was 3440 kg, so getting close to the 3500 limit.
That was full of fuel , water and packed for the summer Holiday.

I run 60psi all around on my van as per the label on my door jam. Seems to do the trick just fine.

Augharan, You dont say Tyre manufacturer or type , you may be getting a smoother ride ,but at a lower pressure you will have more tyre in contact with the road surface resulting in a higher fuel usage and shorter tyre life life. You have seen how travel by rail on the bullet trains has slashed time taken but they still use iron wheels on iron rails as they did from the start of railways, because least resistance to move the load. It is better to check the tyre manufacturers recomended chart, As you will find in Bounders chart 80psi is perfectly normal in new type tyres and most importantly cut down on the roll of a caravan body when cornering.

I always wonder why the manufacturer puts the cold max psi on the side wall. Not many folk pay any heed to it, including ModernTyres.

It is because when a tyre is under load and motion the pressure increases, so to make sure you do not exceed the max tolerance needed, they stamp the maximum pressure at cold not the running pressure.

My tyres increase by up to 10 psi on a run. This year in France the rears, which are set at the recommended 80 psi rose to 90 psi with the fronts (60 psi) doing a similar increase. The temperatures also rose but the tiny figures on the monitor are hard to read so I can’t say off the top of my head what the increase was.

I bought a new Tyrepal unit just before we left for Italy at the end of August and set the pressures after a drive of about 1 mile to my local garage. The pressures were set at 70 in an ambient temperature of about 15/20C.

During the trip the maximum I saw was 81psi in an ambient of about 30C and after a couple of hours on an Italian motorway. The Tyrepal temperature read 45C.

The minimum pressure I saw was 62 early in the morning on an Aire in Switzerland, before driving. The ambient temperature was 2C and the Tyrepal unit read 5C

This is a difference of almost 20 psi which surprised me. It certainly reinforces the need to set the tyre pressure when the tyres are cold

Had a look at the tyres they are Vanco Camper 215 70R 15.
I have found in my 30 years of caravanning my tyres were always changed because of age not wear so at 5000 a year there will be only 25000 mls on them in 5 years. Hopefully they will last till then.
My first van an 06 Swift Kontiki was a lot more comfortable and steady on the road than the new Bailey which was a little disappointing but the lower tyre pressure has put that right, now a dream to drive.
As for fuel consumption it never changed on the lower pressure. 27 - 28 MPG.

BUT what I have found did make a difference on MPG is the diesel.
I read in some mag that you should treat your engine to a fill of Premium diesel now and again, so I decided to do that.
Almost empty I filled with the expensive stuff and didn't think anything more about it until I noticed the MPG starting to creep up.
Keeping an eye on it until the end of the fill it finished at 31.3 MPG. ( on the low Tyre pressure )
After a couple of fills with the normal diesel it's back to 27.3 again.
I suppose another fill would be interesting, so I will try it again soon .

Anybody else use the Premium stuff ??

The oil companies suggest around 3% or 4% improvement which would be around 1mpg.

I usually record my mpg each day when on my long European trips and have found a range between about 25mpg and 31mpg on the ‘full’ days travel. This is on the basis of the Fiat computer.

Over each of the four years I have averaged between 27mpg and 27.5mpg over the whole trip of around 3000miles. This is on the basis of both the Fiat computer and also on tank full to full measurements which I have found to give very similar results.

To be able to establish the comparison between standard diesel and premium diesel you would need to travel the same route.
