Years ago, no problem.
Now, with engine management and multitudes of sensors and inputs it’s an impossibility. Gone are the days where engine swaps from one type to another we’re common, alas no more.

We have set up full management systems on patrol engines, nothing to do with manafacturer systems, these systems are used in race cars and where engines are used for non mainstream use.
Aftermarket standalone management systems for diesels are once off systems and really uncommon, some have tried with mixed results......

Thanks Jon
Much as I expected
Don't know if I fancy the Fiat system (yes I know don't knock it until you've tried it) and on top of that having problems in finding a van conversion under 6 mts with the layout we like. i.e. 2 single beds but not fixed so double up as seats
Most Sprinters seem to be on the XL vans VWs like hens teeth and newer Fords even more so.

Like the Timberland and Shire at present but again Fiat for Auto

Have time will find something

David

I think the merc will have the best box, a proper auto box..... fiats run the comfortmatic, really more of an auto system built on a manual system. I haven’t driven so cant really comment...... but I’ve driven the auto Mercedes van on the 2.7 5 cylinder engine which is good and typical MB smooth. Have owned lots of merc cars, all autos and wouldn’t consider a manual one.

There are new panel van campers appearing almost by the minute.... Benimar Benivan, Rollerteam Toleno, Autotrail V-Line, Dreamer from Rapido, the list goes on... surely there is something with the layout you require with an Auto transmission (although the Fiat is more of an auto clutch than true auto transmission).

Allan
You are not wrong but regret most not suitable (at least we haven't found one yet)
1. They are new and as such not within our budget
2. Most have the sliding door on the wrong side (we don't do Europe)
3. Build quality on most mass produced new vans is not a patch o those of even a couple of years ago.
4. Don't want the hassle that most people have with a new van
and
5. I have to do as SWMBO says
and of these my son 5 is the geatest

Who are you telling David, I couldn't go back to a Manuel now I would get killed in it, our Car and Jeep are proper Automatics, the Motorhome is automatic with manual gearbox and clutch type (Renault Quickshift ) it might not be quite as smooth as the car but I have no problem with that, it operates just the same and is probably not as power hungry as a Torc converter transmission.
