Just turned into the harbour at Rosslare and the front brakes started grinding. I would like to replace them before they damage the discs Does anyone know of a French or German Quickfit equivalent. I have toolbox, jack and axle stand with me but don’t fancy half a day below the van

Are you sure it’s not just a stone caught against the disc

Feuvert 5 rue de la Saline
Cherbourg

There's also a motor factors beside Auchan in Cherbourg that might have the pads for DIY job

it's beside the Auchan Supermarket at the big roundabout where the where the N13 joins the N2013 they have a workshop and would fit then. it's about 20 min up from the boat on either of the roads N13 or N2013
If you phone them in the morning they open at 8.30 that would give them time to get the pads if they did not have them in stock and you could book the van in as you would have an idea when you would get there

Tommy check under, above the brake caliper ,that it is not the anti-rattle springs. they rust in the centre ,then bow up and rub on the underside of the wheel making a scraping noise. This has happened to me . You can remove them as they are not part of the brake just to stop rattle. This will let you sort out replacements as they are common on Peugeots boxer and Citroen Jumper too.

Off the boat, no noise but it started again about 100k when I pulled into a garage. Could it be the driveshaft. There is oil around the outer boot and wheel. Definitely don’t want to replace one here

Life gets better, 140 miles from the port the turbo gave up the ghost but at least I can do without it although a bit slower. Won’t get done for speeding,

Last thing you want to hear but I agree with above. Not sure if I’d be wandering too far from ferry, until I got an expert opinion on possible consequences

Nilrac, the brake problem was the first. It had stopped for a while but started again, going to try Auto Feu Vert tomorrow. I found an Aire close by. No sign of any smoke but I ll keep an eye. The turbo did this once before about 5 or 6 years ago, got it refurbished then. The guy who refurbished told me if it sits for a while it can give bother. The problem is the van doesn’t get out much lately and the things don’t get used. Last time I had so little power was in my 1.6 VW diesel Leisuredrive. I have has my share of breakdowns over the years. We once spent time in Antibes waiting for a part to come from Paris. When Fiat said 4 days delivery my insurance company got it flown from England and I picket it up at Nice airport. So fingers crossed tomorrow

If your turbo has given up again then a common reason for them to fail is the gauze filter in the banjo bolt of the oil feed pipe. Remove banjo bolt, use drill bit to remove filter and fit the bolt again without the gauze filter.... this little filter chokes up over time, restricts the oil feed to the turbo bearings and at 100,000rpm those little bearings don’t survive without proper oil flow. The filter isn’t needed, been here quite a few times.

Ok a bit of an update. I nursed the van to the Caravan Salon at Dusseldorff but when we went to leave it wouldn’t start. I called the recovery and they towed it to the Iveco garage. It was there for three days as it was over the weekend. They rang me to say there was nothing wrong with the turbo and the diagnostic was showing 6 faults. I had previously told them that I had fitted a tuning box but they said that wouldn’t matter. I called a couple of times while it was i the workshop and spoke to a few different mechanics. I still had it in my mind that it might be the chip so offered to show them where it was. It had dislodged from its position and was hanging down in the engine and was obviously worse for wear and a bit rusty. It was removed and all the warning lights went out and the van is back to normal. Still cost me 250 euros for the time

Still not sure about the brakes, there is no more noise. The garage put some grease in the driveshaft gaIter and it has been quiet. The van is going straight to my mechanic when I get home. We are in Belgium at the moment so just have to get it back to Cherbourg and then home, so fingers crossed. There in another annoying noise in the van but I just don’t listen to her
