Time sharing a motorhome

So as we are now seasoned veterans of motorhoming (3 years 😊) we think we are pretty well settled at packing up and being on the road in about 40 minutes at any weekend.

But, it's been a busy year with one thing or another, and we haven't managed to get away as often as we'd like. Our daughter got married two weeks ago, which was a topic occupying Executive Managements thoughts for the past few months, with MOB dress shopping, hats, and god knows what else. Anyhow, the big day has come and gone, all went beautifully, a great time had by all.

So we thought, time to get rolling over the next few weeks!

BUT... Number One son (the only one...) asked if he could borrow the van this weekend to go to a wedding in SLIGO, and take off for a few days touring after. No problem, we said, enjoy! Then Newly Married Daughter (again, the only one- we've two offspring in total) said that she's attending a pals wedding in Roundstone, and accommodation is costing a fortune, so can they borrow the van to attend this on the first weekend in September?

So while we're happy that they've finally figured that the ancient ones aren't so daft after all, we're a little worried that we've opened a can of worms.... Looks like we only have one weekend's custody between now and mid September!

We can only hope that the rain tumbles down and puts them off 😂😂😂

Anyone else suffering this problem?

The insurance argument doesn't work, it's open driving for them both. But I'm not too worried, don't think it's a trend really, and after all, they'll have to pay for our nursing home one day in the distant future...😂😂

When they have a couple of their own with a little prompt now and then about rainy days, they will realise that a caravan is better.
As for them minding you in old age my son advised us when he was 10 not to worry about retirement, that we were going straight from work to the nursing home.

You see they've obviously set up shop on the craic Kevin and saw you refer to the motorhome as their inheritance - they're just getting their monies worth 😂

We will have the opposite problem - my parents will have their beady eyes on it instead! They were going to buy one a few years ago but ended up getting an apartment in Spain. We go out and stay there so can't exactly turn round and say no you can't have it 😂

I've just insured our boys for the defender. So that should keep them entertained for another couple of years. 🤗🤗

Ha we've 3 and none interested in the motorhome, it's the fixed abodes they are hanging around for. Nursing home 2 miles up the road, should we be getting worried or flog the bricks and mortar and go house shopping in birdhill.😂.

my three oldest are chomping at the bit to get their hands on ours, and thats fine if it isnt being used. Unfortuneatley every time they want it, we are off in it. I have a feeling that will change when we change the van and we will be emotionally blackmailed to hand it over. If they make use of it thats ok, but they know the rule, if you break it, youve bought it.

Sorry, but I may be selfish but I just could not pick up the courage to lend my Motorhome to anyone and I mean anyone. My attitude is if they want to Motorhome they work and save and buy one as I had to do. I wonder if any others feel the same? My Motorhome is a bit like my wife, others are welcome to look at it, but don’t touch it! 😂

I am prepared to drive ours to a site anywhere in Ireland to be used as a static base. If they want to drive it they will have to leave a £1,000,000 security deposit. Good luck with raising that !

As long as they chip in for the services, why not....

That's what my dad used to do when I started borrowing his car for the weekends. He was happy out to lend it to me as long as I contributed for the upkeeping of it as well.

[And that's how Rami learned to service his own vehicles to save money :D ]

Our 3 children are young so it will be a while before they'll be looking to borrow ours, although having grown up with it they'll at least know how to treat it (we hope!).

Agree with others who've said they don't lend theirs out. We've had friends hinting to borrow ours but we've made it clear that we don't lend it to anyone, even family. There are too many little things that can can get broken or damaged through misuse especially if users aren't familiar with a Motorhome, much of which may not be evident for some time. I'm on another group (UK) where a borrower is in a panic about their child sitting on the table and breaking it, and were shocked at the cost of replacement when they brought it to a specialist. It's such a niche and specialist market that making good any damages can take time and money.

I think some non-motorhomers (non-family) consider the ban similar to a holiday home or something which you'd be happy to lend out "for a few bob". I just don't think it's worth it (insurance aside) and could also damage a friendship.

As a 21 year old I had a brand new XR2 (youngsters google it) (also wish I’d kept it) and a mate wanted to borrow it to go to London from Cornwall and he would lend me his 1750 maxi instead, no bother. I have a holiday house in Port Isaac let many friends and family use it. My holiday home is worth 6 times the price of my MH but I would not let anyone borrow my MH, I would not even let half my friends or family look inside it let alone sleep in it or drive it.
I’ve no kids and I don’t mind disappointing friends.
Even my last MH which was older would have been off limits.
Plus I’ve seen hire vans and the way they are used (abused) and others that have borrowed someone else’s pride of joy but don’t understand that most MH are built with the cheapest possible components that brake if you even sneeze near them.

If somebody hints about borrowing my Motorhome or my little Hona step-thru I tell them to check out DoneDeal/Gumtree as there's plenty on there.

Where are they when I'm skinning my knuckles on a stubborn bolt?

After we got our mh, a few of my wife's mates dropped hints about borrowing and were left with a very clear rejection.
But then some on my mates got together, formulated a plan which in due course was presented to me.
An off peak weekend away without wives and kids, borrowing the mh and me, to a location of my choice. But what is in it for me? A tank of diesel and as much free food than I can eat. Happy Days, but only 3 fellows per time, and the last to arrive shares a bed with me.
3 years on, it's still working with one exception, Spring 2017, we were in Killaloe and one fellow over indulged, who ran out the door at 3 am to feed the fish. Unfortunately when he tried to reopen the door some time later, it was locked securely. After a few hour on a bench watching the Shannon flowing by, the door magically unlocked itself.
The ironic thing is that, I snored throughout the entire episode and it was the other 2 guys who excluded pukey guts.
Malcolm
