DoneDeal is hard work

I've advertised an end-of-life VW Passat estate on DoneDeal as a "Spares or repair" car. Hoping some enthusiast will snap it up as a parts car. I've received probably 30-40 texts & private messages and +10 phone calls. Just about ALL of the people that showed interest did NOT read the description or look at the photos. I put a detailed description of the faults & condition of the car but no body seems to have read the feckin thing.

This is the first time I've sold a car on DoneDeal and I'm pretty sure it'll be the last!!

Based on the interest, it looks like I'll be scrapping it myself, selling the desirable parts and dragging it to the scrapyard. As if I didn't have enough to do. :-(

Most folk read nothing, they look at pictures and want results without doing any of the work themselves. It's how Facebook etc has made them.

No work but instant gratification required.

But back on topic........ So what's wrong with the car?

Alternator not working and it fouls plugs on cylinder #4 the odd time. Probably a worn valve seal, a common enough problem with the passat engines I'm told.
It was a decent enough workhorse. When I bought my current car I parked the passat. Bloody thing cant be killed though and I'd hate to see it crushed. Starts on the button every time I sit into it and it drives well.

When the timing belt failed on my Audi last year I dragged the passat out of retirement and it ran like a champ while I was repairing the engine on the A4.

Maybe I just need to learn to "let go" of some stuff!

Some of the callers were expecting a "perfect car"... For €300 ono!!

Well Blag if it's any consolation to you Daft.ie is exactly the same. For the last few years we have been renting out a room to students and every year I put a detailed description in the ad. And yes every year I get the same stupid questions from people who quite clearly haven't bothered reading the detail. For whatever reason people have lost the ability to read beyond a headline.

For that reason I use Adverts.ie instead and don't give a phone number. Questions and answers in public view

I've found Adverts the absolute worst for messers, I was buying a roofrack from a woman in Dublin, made an offer and she accepted, then she said she had a flu and couldn't post it, that turned into another injury and yada yada.
In the end she just cancelled the sale and sold it to someone else.
If she didn't want to post them, Then tell me, all this faffing around and bullshittery just wasted my time.
Most buyers are messers with nothing better to do, in fairness there are some genuine people but its probably only 20% of people tbh.
I know many people that would rather sell locally at a less price than deal with all the shite that goes with DD and Adverts.

Kevin,
A few years back i had my previous Burstner on done deal.
To say i nearly pulled the little bit of hair that i have left......

You should have put the "read full add" at the top of the add.

Good luck with the sale

DoneDeal is like the lonely hearts for motors these days & home of the last price merchants 😂 I have to use it for my business and i think for every one genuine call I get, I get another 5 asking what is the best price for cash is ! My ads couldn't be more descriptive and nearly every call I get asks something that is in the ad! Bring back the buy & sell 😁

Its a lesson learned for me.

Sell a car at rock bottom prices... prepare to deal with the bottom feeders.
