Fuse keeps blowing

 ·
Posted: 29.06.2018  ·  #1

I noticed last night that there was no electrics in the living quarters, this morning I see that there's a 10a fuse blown.
I replace it and as soon as I plug in the EHU lead it blows again.
I've attached the wiring diagram, I think it's the fuse between the leisure battery and the main motor battery, that's the bit I've highlighted in the picture
Any suggestions on where to start? Apart from putting in a 15a fuse instead.

Thanks,
Seán

Putting in a bigger fuse is a bad idea. You don’t want to cause a fire. You need to figure out why or what is drawing more than 10 Amps. This is only a problem when plugged into EHU? If you replace the fuse whilst not on EHU will the appliances run? From the picture it looks to me that the problem is your mains charger. Can you isolate that, as in turn it off or unplug it? Does the fuse blow then?

Failing that you would need to isolate the culprit. Turn off, us plus appliance one by one to see what blows the fuse. Otherwise you have a short, most likely a cable.

It only blows when I plug in the EHU, it blows right away. When I don't have that plugged in I have power. I haven't tried to isolate yet but will look at that. On the phone right now to an elec eng mate who has a camper too.

I'm working from home today, so don't tell the boss what I'm at:)

Could be that relay is in trouble too.

I wouldn't use a bigger fuse either.

Start with the EHU lead. Borrow another and try again.

Has the system worked in the past, or is the whole thing new to you, where did you get the van from/ country?

I've had the van for 12 months now, no problems at all with the electrics. Just got it back from the mechanic last night, with cvrt passed.
Give me something mechanical and I'm happy, I don't have elec knowledge, wiring a plug and changing a fuse is as far as it goes for me.

I can understand symbols on a wiring diagram, just can't interpret them to save my life, or motorhome. I'll have a bit more time this evening after work so I'll start digging and googling then.

Looks like a problem with the battery charger.

Disconnect the EHU.
Replace fuse. Do not increase fuse size.
Switch off/disconnect the 230 volts supply to the charger.
Plug in again to EHU.
Switch on the EHU.
Check if fuse has blown.
If fuse has blown then problem is likely in the EHU supply circuit.

If the fuse has not blown then switch on charger.
Check if fuse has blown.
If fuse has blown then problem is in charger circuit.

Having just came back from the test ,where they shake the living crap out on the vehicle . I would start looking for a connection going to earth in the wiring down stream from the fuse to the charger/battery.

If it is the charger that needs replacing, should I be replacing like for like or are all pretty much the same? What to avoid, what's recommended etc?

Thanks,
Seán

I'm back in business. Much phone calls, googling and you guys on here.
I took the LB out and put it on charge overnight, back in this morning and the fuse has stopped blowing. Lights and waterpump working as they always did. As a precaution I'm going to get a new leisure battery given that I don't know how long this one has been in use and that when I took a reading last night it was putting out 0.0v

It seems to happen when a LB is down to zero that when you plug in the 220v a fuse blows, while it might not be common, it's certainly not unheard of.

Only thing now is, the switch for the step only brings the step in when hooked up to 220v, it will bring it in/out on 12v, a small thing that I don't know if it was always like that and I didn't notice. That will be another day's googling.

Mad Max, yeah it does that too, but it always did that. Only going in when hooked up to mains instead of both in and out is new though.
