Fiat Ducato 244 fron wheel bearings

I can hear a cracking noise from my left front area, Gut and research tells me it's a wheel bearing.

I've read the previous thread here on the topic.

Looking up bearings there appear to be two sizes of wheel bearings that are used on the 244 platform.

One has an 88 mm o/d, the other had a 90 mm o/d.

Is there any way to find out which one is the right one before I start the strip out?

Is it when turning only Eamonn?
May be the friction bearing on the top of the shock,

The bearing will whine whilst in a straight line aswell as turning,

Also some tyres give the impression that a bearing is gone,

Check well before you buy anything

Thanks for that. IT's not the bearing on the top of the shock. The crackling noise gets louder as the road speed increases, it's not a normal drone that I would associate with a wheel bearing but even on the smoothest of roads you can hear it. It's getting more noticeable every trip.

Looking to get away again next weekend but won't be able to start stripping until tomorrow to measure the size of the bearing. That rules ebay out if I want to be on the road at the weekend.

I had a noise in my ducato based camper heading home to the ferry in Wales, I thought it was a wheel bearing, I got to one of the filling stations kilkenny side of Dublin I had to pull in the noise was so bad, I took off the wheel cover one stud missing and the rest loose on one front wheel tightening up the rest drove home no noise, I was lucky.

It could be rust on the brake caliper rubbing on the disk or a slightly loose caliper rubbing on the disk or a stone this happened to me a few times on a Skoda yeti

For bearings try
E Fox Rd engineering Balldonnell.
Or
The reliance Bearing and gear Co.
JFK industrial estate.
Call them giving them all the numbers on the inner and outer edge of the bearing ,also the number on any seals.
They will Probably have a kit.
But as said bearings don't usually make screeching noise ,more likely to be brake pad/discs related particular look at the inner pad it can wear more then the outer. if the discs are worn you can get the metal part of the pad hitting the disc along the inner and outer edge. tell tale is a very shinny mark in the Rust .
Have a good pull and push on the wheel when jacked up,for a very bad bearing.

AFAIK changing the wheel bearing on a Ducato is not DIY job. Pressing out the old bearing and pressing in the new one requires a seriously powerful press, usually only found in garages that service commercial vehicles.

Simple with the right kit [url]

Saw that video alright. I'm a fitter by trade, use to fix railway locomotives and a mate has a decent bearing press. I'll strip it down tomorrow and see what way the land lies.

The local Fiat garage brings some of those Ducato front wheel bearing up to our 50 ton press as theirs won’t budge them also as said they have a habit of the wheel nuts loosening

Pity you're not a bit nearer I'd pop up and get you to press the bearing out.

Finally found the problem and it wasn't the wheel bearing.

Having read all the contributions here and not being 100% certain that it was the wheel bearing I decided to leave it be and go to Kinsale. The wheel bearing didn't fail but the noise was still there.
Yesterday I investigated the area where the noise was coming from. Found the culprit.

A piece of trim where the body joins to the cab had come loose and was vibrating off the door. The higher the speed, the more it vibrated or crackeld against the door which amplified the sound.

A pop rivet or 2 today will sort it out.

I had a similar experience lol. As I was leaving a campsite 100 plus miles from home, I heard a crack and when turning the steering became tight in one direction and it knocked and bumped as I drove whilst turning. I self diagnosed that it was the cv joint or driveshaft. I needed to be home and carefully and slowly drove home only for the mechanic to discover that the plastic under engine cover had dropped on one side and was rubbing on the driveshaft and steering controls

That's brilliant,
pop rivet's are a hell of a lot cheaper then wheel bearings etc,

Changing Hessys wheel bearing was a difficult job in the driveway.
I stuck it here on the site if you can find it.
Good find with the detail find!
