Whatever about the pulleys, "while you are in there, always do the water pump" is the conventional wisdom.

Depends on the engine model.
For example post 2002 Fiat X244 engines are configured in such a way that the water pump can be replaced without the labour cost of disturbing the timing belt. My local FIAT Professional Service Centre advised me that there was no point in doing the water pump unless it was giving trouble.
My engine is on its third timing belt and original water pump.

As above, if it's in the way, you might as well change it and everything related.

If it is on a separated place, then you can get away without doing it for sure. Consider the cost and make your own conclusions... doesn't matter what it is for me, if I'm on the way and my hands are dirty already, if I can afford it, I much prefer to change parts.

Murphy's law will dictate that the part you leave alone is the one that will fail :P

Who is telling you the belt is in need of replacement at 26000 mls ? what vehicle and what engine is it?
What happened to the 60/90k miles before the belt was due.
you would hardly be in need of an oil change yet.

Age I'd say.

Every 6 - 7 years for our Ducato.

I stick to the 5 year recommendation, which means it has been done every 47,000km or thereabouts. Peace of mind is what it's all about, I don't want to have to fork out for a €5k engine rebuild following a snapped belt.

Having learned the hard way I would firmly recommend changing belt, tensioners and pump every time. Saving a few quid on parts isn't worth the risk of damaging the engine. Peace of mind is worth more
