Caravan and Motorhome Club says NI part of RoI

A friend of mine, who lives in Cork, which as we all know is firmly planted in The Republic of Ireland, and most definitely not part of the entity known as 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', recently went about buying Red Pennant travelling insurance for his trip to The Irish Division National at Fivemiletown Co. Antrim.

Imagine his bewilderment when told by the Caravan and Motorhome Club agent that visiting NI was not 'foreign' travel as he was not travelling outside his 'home' country so their Red Pennant cover does not apply.

Being rather taken aback my friend asked to speak to a supervisor, who confirmed, that if going to England, Scotland, Wales or elsewhere in Europe Red Pennant cover was available but visiting NI does not qualify as travelling outside his 'home' country.

So, come on, let's get stuck into a discussion on the merits of the C&MC position, with particular reference to Brexit :-/ :D

I wonder would the insurance policy be as understanding at a claim time?
I hope that your mate got this in writing.

The C&MC made it clear that travel in NI was not included in Red Pennant cover for members from the RoI, so he didn't bother purchasing.

It may not!

This thread is being watched very closely as the admin team will not allow any form of politics to be posted as it is a very emotive and divisive subject, so if commenting keep it on the topic of the insurance.

I'm in Northern Ireland and not exactly sure what the red pennant insurance is. I presume it is like the green card insurance I'm supposed to get for heading to the Continent?

I received a renewal of my motorcycle insurance today. In the schedule attached with the certificate was this endorsement:- (Cut & Paste)

E551 - Use in the Republic of Ireland
THE SCHEDULE - continued
The geographical limits mentioned in your policy allow your vehicle to be used in the Republic of Ireland with indemnity as if it were in the United Kingdom.

If I'm way off the mark with what I thought red pennant is, sorry, but otherwise I think there is some sort of reciprocal agreement between insurance companies which allows people in Northern Ireland to have full, equal cover in the Republic and possibly vice versa.

In agreement with Betty, I do not have to take any additional cover when we come over be it North or South, so I guess I am a little surprised that those of you in the South have to take out additional cover if you travel across the Irish Sea.

I vaguely remember a green triangle that had to be displayed on the car's windscreen when visiting Eire; sorry 26 counties; sorry the Free State.

Errrrrr.......what's it called again?

Just so long as no-one refers to "Southern Ireland", we will be fine.

The green triangle went on your windscreen and you had a book to get stamped when, as we said then croosed the border to go to the State. and if you wanted to return after nine you had to book a pass to get a customs officer to attend and pay. Maybe Mrs May is in the Caravan and Motorhome club and they know what we don't.

The Irish Free State was the name from independence (from the United kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland) until it left The Commonwealth.
In 1937 it became the Republic of Ireland, commonly know as Ireland.
Eire is the name Ireland as Gaeilge
